Sundial Lodge
The Sundial Lodge, also known today as the L’Auberge Carmel, a Relais & Châteaux property, is a historic Medieval Revival hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. It was designed by architect Albert L. Farr of San Francisco Bay Area and was built in 1929–1930, by Master builder Michael J. Murphy. It was designated as an important commercial building in the city's ''Downtown Historic District Property Survey,'' and was recorded with the Department of Parks and Recreation on December 5, 2002. History The Sundial Lodge is a three-story, wood framed Medieval Revival style hotel built around an interior courtyard. The exterior walls have smooth cement stucco. It has five interior stucco-clad chimneys. It is located on Monte Verde Street and 7th Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Carmel-by-the-Sea (), often simply called Carmel, is a city in Monterey County, California, United States, founded in 1902 and incorporated on October 31, 1916. Situated on the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel is known for its natural scenery and rich artistic history. In 1906, the '' San Francisco Call'' devoted a full page to the "artists, writers and poets at Carmel-by-the-Sea", and in 1910 it reported that 60 percent of Carmel's houses were built by citizens who were "devoting their lives to work connected to the aesthetic arts." Carmel Pine Cone
The ''Carmel Pine Cone'' is a weekly newspaper serving the city of Carmel-by-the-Sea and the surrounding Monterey Peninsula, Carmel Valley and Big Sur region of Monterey County in central California. Despite not having a digital presence, a PDF of the printed newspaper is available weekly online. The Pine Cone celebrated its centennial edition in February 2015. History The Pine Cone was founded in 1915 by William Overstreet who proclaimed in the first four-page edition of 300 copies, "we are here to stay!" By 1924, the Pine Cone moved into the De Yoe Building, opposite of the Carmel Post Office. Overstreet sold the paper in 1926 to J.A. Easton. The offices move to the Goold Building from 1970 to 2000. The Mary Dummage Shop is a historic Craftsman Fairy tale commercial building in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. It was built in 1926, by builder Percy Parkes. The shop was designated as a significant commercial building in the city's ''Downtown Historic District Property Survey,'' and was recorded with the Department of Parks and Recreation on September 13, 2002. The building is now occupied by the Galante Vineyards Tasting Room. History In 1926, Earl Percy Parkes built and designed a Craftsman Fairy tale building for Mary L. Dummage, based on Hugh W. Comstock's Tuck Box design, for $1,450 (). It is on Dolores Street between Ocean Avenue and 7th Avenue. The building is called the Mary Dummage Shop, and a common name for it was the "White Rabbit," that sold clothing, handknit sweaters, gifts, and home accessories. Pine Inn, once called the Hotel Carmelo, is one of the early first-class Arts and Crafts movement, Arts and Crafts, Tudor architecture, Tudor, Spanish architecture, Spanish style hotels established in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The Pine Inn is a historical resource dating back to 1889 when pioneer Santiago J. Duckworth built Hotel Carmelo. James Franklin Devendorf, renamed the hotel the "Pine Inn" in 1904. Henrietta Mary Shore (January 22, 1880 – May 17, 1963) was a Canadian-born artist who was a pioneer of modernism. She lived a large part of her life in the United States, most notably California. Early life Shore was born in Toronto, Canada, to Henry and Charlotte Shore. She was the youngest of seven children. She was drawn to both painting and nature at a young age, remarking "I was on my way home from school and saw myself reflected in a puddle. It was the first time I had seen my image completely surrounded by nature, and I suddenly had an overwhelming sense of belonging to it—of actually being part of every tree and flower.
