Sulphur River
The Sulphur River is a river in northeast Texas and southwest Arkansas in the United States. Geography The Sulphur River begins at the confluence of its north and south forks forming (following earlier meanders) the northern and southern boundaries of, and meeting at the eastern end of, Delta County (Texas). This is about northeast of the town of Sulphur Bluff, northeast of Dallas, and downstream (air miles) along the south fork from the Cooper Lake dam. The river flows generally eastward through several Texas counties and provides most of the water for Wright Patman Lake, on the border between Bowie and Cass counties. Below Wright Patman Dam, the river continues its generally eastward flow to the Arkansas state line. The river flows southeastward through Miller County in southwestern Arkansas for until it joins the southbound Red River east of Doddridge, a few miles north of the Louisiana border. Wright Patman Dam
Wright Patman Dam (formerly called Texarkana Dam) is an earth-fill dam across the Sulphur River in northeast Texas in the United States. The water impounded by the dam forms Wright Patman Lake. Geography Wright Patman Dam is situated southwest of Texarkana, Texas. The dam straddles the border between Bowie County and Cass County. The dam is long, with a wide spillway. The top of the dam is above sea level, or above the riverbed. History Wright Patman Dam, then known as Texarkana Dam, was authorized as part of the Flood Contract Act of 1946. Construction began in 1948, and the Sulphur River was blocked and routed through the dam's control gates in 1953. The gates were closed and water impounded in 1956. Sulphur Springs, Texas
Sulphur Springs is a city in and the county seat of Hopkins County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census, its population was 15,449. Sulphur Springs is located along the western edge of Northeast Texas. History Sulphur Springs was named so because when the area was first settled, springs of sulfurous water were abundant. Eli Bib, one of the first European-American settlers, ran a store from his cabin, selling staples, whiskey, persimmon beer, and slabs of ginger cake. In 1849, Dr. and Mrs. Davis moved into the area. Dr. Davis envisioned the spot as a future city. In 1850, the residents organized the area's first church (building), church, the Methodist Episcopal. Construction of the church was completed in 1853. Miller County is a county located in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 43,462. The county seat is Texarkana.
