Suite For String Orchestra (Nielsen)
Carl Nielsen's ''Suite for String Orchestra'' was one of the composer's earliest works and was first performed at the Tivoli Gardens, Tivoli Hall on 8 September 1888. Background Nielsen composed the ''Suite for String Orchestra'' when he was only 22 and was still studying composition with Orla Rosenhoff, his former teacher at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, Conservatory. It was first performed on 8 September 1888 at the Tivoli Hall in Copenhagen where the Tivoli Orchestra was conducted by Balduin Dahl, a recognised supporter of young talent. It was a great success. Nielsen, who played in the orchestra, was called back several times and the middle movement was played as an encore. Carl Nielsen
Carl August Nielsen (; 9 June 1865 – 3 October 1931) was a Danish composer, conductor and violinist, widely recognized as his country's most prominent composer. Brought up by poor yet musically talented parents on the island of Funen, he demonstrated his musical abilities at an early age. He initially played in a military band before attending the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen from 1884 until December 1886. He premiered his Op. 1, '' Suite for Strings'', in 1888, at the age of 23. The following year, Nielsen began a 16-year stint as a second violinist in the Royal Danish Orchestra under the conductor Johan Svendsen, during which he played in Giuseppe Verdi's ''Falstaff'' and '' Otello'' at their Danish premieres. Orla Rosenhoff
Orla Albert Vilhelm Rosenhoff (1 October 1844 – 4 June 1905) was a Danish musician, the son of , an influential teacher of Danish musicians. Born in Copenhagen, Rosenhoff was a student of Adolph Lund and later of Niels Gade. When the music academy was established in 1867, Rosenhoff was the acting teacher of piano. He was later employed from 1881 to 1892 as a teacher of harmony, counterpoint and fugue. The Royal Danish Academy of Music, or Royal Danish Conservatory of Music ( da, Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium), in Copenhagen is the oldest professional institution of musical education in Denmark as well as the largest, with approximately 400 students. Johan Severin Svendsen (30 September 184014 June 1911) was a Norwegian composer, conductor and violinist. Born in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway, he lived most his life in Copenhagen, Denmark. Svendsen's output includes two symphonies, a violin concerto, a cello concerto, and the Romance for violin, as well as a number of Norwegian Rhapsodies for orchestra. This table of works by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen initially lists them by genre and composition date within a genre. History Nielsen wrote music in many genres, notably symphonies, concertos and choral music, but also operas and incidental music, chamber music, solo works for violin, piano and organ as well as a considerable number of songs. Nielsen assigned an opus number only to selected compositions, from Op 1 for the Suite for String Orchestra in 1888 to Op 58 for the organ work (1930–1931).
