Suishin-kai
The Suishin-kai was a Japanese yakuza gang based in Nagasaki. The gang, affiliated with the Yamaguchi-gumi, Japan's largest yakuza syndicate, came to prominence in April 2007 when its former underboss (then demoted to Captain), Tetsuya Shiroo, shot and killed the mayor of Nagasaki, Iccho Itoh was a Japanese politician who served as the mayor of Nagasaki from 1995 to 2007. Iccho Itoh
was a Japanese politician who served as the mayor of Nagasaki from 1995 to 2007. Itoh was fatally shot by Tetsuya Shiroo, a member of the ''yakuza'', on 17 April 2007 and died the following morning. Early life Kazunaga Itō was born on 23 August 1945 in Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture, 8 days after the Surrender of Japan and two weeks after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Itoh's family moved to his father's hometown of Nagasaki when he was three years-old. Itoh first aspired to become mayor of Nagasaki while attending Nishi Prefectural High School, and after graduating from Waseda University with a degree in political science began working for the Nagasaki City Development Corporation. Tetsuya Shiroo
was the former leader of the Suishin-kai, a Nagasaki-based ''yakuza'' group affiliated with the Yamaguchi-gumi, the largest ''yakuza'' organization in Japan. Murder of Iccho Itoh On April 17, 2007, Shiroo shot Iccho Itoh, the mayor of Nagasaki, who died early the next morning. Shiroo's apparent motive for the assassination was a grudge over an insurance claim. City officials had refused to compensate him for a Yamaguchi-gumi vehicle that was damaged at a public works construction site in 2003. It was reported in the Japanese press that prior to the shooting, Shiroo had mailed a letter to TV Asahi outlining his grudges against the mayor and the city government. Yamaguchi-gumi
is Japan's largest ''yakuza'' organization. It is named after its founder Harukichi Yamaguchi. Its origins can be traced back to a loose labor union for dockworkers in Kobe before World War II. It is one of the largest criminal organizations in the world. According to the National Police Agency, it had 8,500 active members at the end of 2021.
