Sugar Creek Township is one of thirteen townships in Parke County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 322 and it contained 154 housing units. The township includes the north half of Turkey Run State Park. History Sugar Creek Township was established in 1855. The Lancelot C. Ewbank House, Richard Lieber Log Cabin, Lusk Home and Mill Site, Narrows Covered Bridge, and Wilkins Mill Covered Bridge are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lusk Home And Mill Site
The Lusk Home and Mill Site was the first development in present Turkey Run State Park, Indiana's second oldest state park. Vermonter Salmon Lusk was awarded this land for serving in the Battle of Tippecanoe under William Henry Harrison. The Lusks were largely self-sufficient. Captain Lusk built a log cabin in 1822 and lived there with his spouse and eight children until 1841. Then he and his sons made bricks, carved walnut woodwork, and built the brick house. He dug a coal mine to heat his house. Lusk built a gristmill in 1826 with a foundation of stone-cut stone. A horizontal waterwheel was powered by water diverted by a dam down a race. A settlement grew around Lusk's house and mill, until a Sugar Creek flood on New Year's Day, 1847, washed away every building except Lusk's brick house. Wilkins Mill Covered Bridge
The Wilkins Mill Covered Bridge is north of Rockville, Indiana. The single span Burr Arch Truss covered bridge structure was built by William Hendricks in 1906. The bridge is long, wide, and high. ''Note:'' This includes Site map and Accompanying photographs. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. History Solomon Jessup and Zimri Hunt built a mill in 1835 upstream from the bridge site. George Wilkins later opened a store there in 1853 and a carding mill, operated by Solomon Jessup and William Hunt was also built. In 1855 Wilkins bought the mill but later tore it down and built a new one. This is the source of the name Wilkins Mill, however, in 1877 this mill burned down and another mill was built which stood until 1947.
