Geography According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of , of which (or 99.72%) is land and (or 0.25%) is water. It contains the town of Wallace, located near the center of the township, and the unincorporated community of Wooley Corner to the northwest of Wallace. Indiana State Road 32 runs along a portion of the northern border before veering east-southeast through the northeastern part of the township. Cain Township is one of eleven townships in Fountain County, Indiana. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,142 and it contained 488 housing units. History Cain Township was one of the first townships to be established in the county; it was established on July 24, 1826. At that time, much of the land was forested, but 100 years later most of the land was used for agriculture. There were also several grain and lumber mills along Coal Creek, but these also were gone by the early 20th century. The town of Hillsboro was laid out in the 1830s and still exists; the town of Rynear was established in the far northwest corner of the township, but was gone by the early 1900s. The township's population was 1,763 in 1880, 1,537 in 1900, and 1,403 in 1910. State Road 234 exists in two sections in Indiana. The western portion begins at the Illinois border from a Vermilion County, Illinois, county road. It runs east from there to U.S. Route 136 (US 136) near Jamestown. Much of the route is a scenic, two-lane road with very tight turns. The primary access to Shades State Park is located along SR 234. Its eastern portion goes from the U.S. Route 36/ State Road 67 concurrency in McCordsville, Indiana. The eastern terminus is at an intersection with State Road 38. Wallace, originally named Jacksonville, is a town located in Jackson Township, Fountain County, Indiana, United States. At the 2010 census, the town had a total population of 105. History Jacksonville, one of Fountain County's early settlements, was established by John Bowman and his father Henry in the early 1830s on land situated just north of Mill Creek and was named for Andrew Jackson. The town's name in informal speech was often shortened to "Jackville". The first settler at the site was Richard Williams who erected a cabin as early as 1826, several years before the town was laid out, with the first house erected after Jacksonville's platting belonging to William Guilliams.
