Sueko Matsueda Kimura
Sueko Matsueda Kimura (June 10, 1912 – December 25, 2001) was an American artist. She was born in Papaikou, Hawaii in 1912. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she met fellow art student Keichi Kimura, whom she married in 1942. She also attended the Chouinard Art Institute (Los Angeles), Columbia University (New York City), the Brooklyn Museum Art School (New York City), and with Yasuo Kuniyoshi at the Art Students League of New York. She taught at the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1952 until her retirement as Professor of Art in 1977. Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a solid surface (called the "matrix" or "support"). Hawaii State Foundation On Culture And The Arts
The Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts was established by the Hawaii State Legislature in 1965 to "promote, perpetuate, preserve, and encourage culture and the arts, history and the humanities as central to the quality of life of the people of Hawaii". It allowed Hawaii to receive federal grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1967, the Hawaii State Legislature enacted the Art in State Buildings Law, to be administered by the foundation. It mandated that 1% of the construction costs of new state buildings be set aside to purchase art. Hawaii thus became the first state in the United States with a Percent for Art law. In 1970, the foundation and the state Hawai'i Department of Education, Department of Education jointly established the Artists in the Schools Program, making Hawaii the first state to establish a statewide partnership between schools and professional artists. The Honolulu Museum of Art (formerly the Honolulu Academy of Arts) is an art museum in Honolulu, Hawaii. The museum is the largest of its kind in the state, and was founded in 1922 by Anna Rice Cooke.
