''Sucedió en La Habana'' ("It Happened in Havana") is a 1938 Cuban film. It stars Luana Alcañiz (as Luana de Alcañiz), Juan Torena, Rita Montaner and Carlos Orellana. One of the must successful and ambitious Cuban films during the 1930s. Juan Torena
Juan de Garchitorena de Carvajal, known in cinema as Juan Torena (1898–1983), was a Spanish-Filipino footballer and actor. After emigrating to Argentina at a young age, he became a footballer who eventually played for the Spanish club FC Barcelona. Later in his life, he went to North America where he acted in Hollywood films, appearing in both English and Spanish-language versions. He was married to the actress Natalie Moorhead. Rita Aurelia Fulcida Montaner y Facenda (20 August 1900 – 17 April 1958), known as Rita Montaner, was a Cuban singer, pianist and actress. In Cuban parlance, she was a '' vedette'' (a star), and was well known in Mexico City, Paris, Miami and New York, where she performed, filmed and recorded on numerous occasions. She was one of Cuba's most popular artists between the late 1920s and 1950s, renowned as ''Rita de Cuba''. Though classically trained as a soprano for zarzuelas, her mark was made as a singer of Afro-Cuban salon songs including "The Peanut Vendor" and " Siboney". Gonzalo Roig Lobo (Havana, 20 July 1890 – Havana, 13 June 1970) was a Cuban composer, pianist, violinist and musical director. He was a pioneer of the symphonic movement in Cuba. His most popular works are the zarzuela ''Cecilia Valdés'' and the song " Quiéreme mucho" (known in English as "Yours"). Life and career In 1902, he began to study piano, music theory and solfège and then later graduated in music studies at the Havana Conservatory. In 1907, he played part, as a pianist, in an ensemble ( trio), and thus started his very active career in music, composed his first musical piece ''Voice of misfortune'' for piano and solo voice. Ignacio Piñeiro
Ignacio Piñeiro Martínez (May 21, 1888 – March 12, 1969) was a Cuban musician, bandleader and composer whose career started in rumba and flowered in the rise of the son. He was one of the most important composers of son music; in total he wrote about 327 numbers, mostly sones. Piñeiro was a brilliant rumbero who worked with musical groups from 1903 onwards. In 1906, was a member of the Timbre de Oro '' coro de clave y guaguancó'' (a vocal group precursor of contemporary guaguancó), and later directed Los Roncos, another famous ''coro de guaguancó''. He was taught the double bass by María Teresa Vera, and in 1926 he was a member of her band, Sexteto Occidente, which recorded in New York City. Guyún
Vincente González Rubiera (27 October 1908 – 29 September 1987), better known as Guyún, was an influential Cuban guitarist, harmonist and teacher, who tapped into classical guitar techniques to revive the accompaniment of the trova. He achieved the finest transcriptions for guitar. Born on 27 October 1908 in Santiago de Cuba, Guyún originally came to Havana to study medicine, but finding the university shut under Gerardo Machado, he started playing the guitar to earn a living. He started studying guitar under Sindo Garay, and later understudied Severino López, who had an excellent classical training in the Tárrega– Pujol tradition in Spain. Guyún developed a modern concept of harmony, and a way to apply classical technique to popular Cuban music. He became more adventurous, yet still in Cuban vein, and in 1938 stopped performing to devote himself to teaching the guitar.
