Burundi is a unitary state which is sub-divided at three levels: provinces, communes, and ''collines'' (hills). Divisions Provinces The largest administrative division in Burundi is the province. There are 18 provinces in Burundi, each named after its provincial capital. Each province has a Provincial Governor. The provincial organisation of Burundi has been reformed on a number of occasions. The most recent province, Rumonge, was created in 2015. Burundi
Burundi (, ), officially the Republic of Burundi ( rn, Repuburika y’Uburundi ; Swahili language, Swahili: ''Jamuhuri ya Burundi''; French language, French: ''République du Burundi'' ), is a landlocked country in the Great Rift Valley at the junction between the African Great Lakes region and East Africa. It is bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and southeast, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west; Lake Tanganyika lies along its southwestern border. Kirundo Province
Kirundo Province is one of the eighteen provinces of Burundi. Kirundo has three big lakes: Cohoha, Rweru, and Rwihinda. Lakes Cohoha and Rweru are located in commune Busone, and Lake Rwihinda is in commune Kirundo. Kirundo is the capital city of province Kirundo. Before the climate change, Kirundo was the richest province because of its productive land. Now Kirundo is no longer productive. The climate change devastate the province forever. In fifteen years those three lakes are almost half evaporated. It is the northernmost province and it shares an international border with Rwanda. Rutana Province
Rutana Province is one of the 18 provinces of Burundi. It contains the Kagera waterfalls, and the Nyakazu Fault. History Rutana Province was originally created on 26 September 1960 as part of national political and administrative reforms initiated by the Belgian colonial administration in Ruanda-Urundi. In 1962 Burundi became independent. Rumonge Province
Rumonge Province is one of the eighteen provinces of Burundi. It was created on 26 March 2015 by combining the communes of Burambi, Buyengero and Rumonge, previously part of Bururi Province, with the Bugarama and Muhuta communes previously belonging to Bujumbura Rural Province. Geography The capital is at Rumonge, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. The Rumonge Nature Reserve, a semi-deciduous forest, and Kigwena Nature Reserve, a lowland tropical forest, are located in the province. Government The province's first governor, Juvénal Bigirimana, was sworn in on 17 April 2015. In June 2015 it elected four deputies to Burundi's National Assembly, and in July it chose its first two senators, Jean-Pierre Ndayahundwa and Tharcisse Rutomo. Muramvya Province
Muramvya Province is one of the 18 provinces of Burundi. The capital city is Muramvya. In 2007 the province was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. Culture The area is renowned for the route of enthronement of the ''Bami'' (kings), the royal capital of Mbuye, the necropolis of the queen mothers in Mpotsa, and the royal necropolis of Nkiko-Mugamba, amongst other things. Makamba Province
Makamba Province is the southernmost province of Burundi. The province has a population of 430,899 (2008 census) and covers an area of 1,960 km. The provincial capital is Makamba. Makamba has six communes, many refugees have returned from Tanzania to this province, especially to the communes of Kayogoro, Nyanza lac, Mabanda and Vugizo. This causes a big problem, because there is not enough land for everybody. It is the most fertile province of Burundi.
