Stuttaford's was a chain of upscale department stores in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia that operated for 159 years from 1858 through 2017. It was nicknamed the "Harrod's of South Africa". At closing it had seven stores in South Africa, two in Botswana, and one in Namibia. It continues to operate in Namibia only. History Founder Samson Rickard Stuttaford opened his first shop in 1857 in Cape Town city centre. His son was Richard Stuttaford (b. 1870) was a prominent businessman and entered the firm in 1886. In 1859 Povall & Stuttaford was established. In 1868 the company Thorne, Stuttaford & Co. was established in collaboration with William Thorne. Its main Cape Town store at the corner of Adderley and Hout streets, opened in 1938, was designed by in-house Harrods architect Louis David Blanc, echoing the style of the London department store's buildings. Cavendish Square (shopping Centre)
Cavendish Square is a shopping centre in Claremont, Cape Town. It was at the time the largest upscale centre to open in Cape Town and was a project of Stuttafords department store. Original tenants included a full-line Stuttaford's store, a Greatermans department store, whose space was later taken by Garlicks. The centre opened September 7, 1972. It is a popular retail destination in the area, offering a wide range of shops, boutiques, restaurants, and entertainment options. Current anchors include Woolworths South Africa, Woolworths, Cotton On Group, Cotton On, H&M, Mr Price, Pick n Pay Stores, Pick n Pay, and Ster-Kinekor (Including a loyalty club and a D-BOX Technologies, D-BOX cinema). Adderley Street
Adderley Street is a street in Cape Town, South Africa. It is considered the main street of the central business district (downtown) of Cape Town. The Christmas lights, night markets, main train station and numerous shops and restaurants and office towers are on this thoroughfare. History The street was originally named ''Heerengracht'', after the canal (''"gracht"'') which ran down its centre, and which had its origins in the rivers from Table Mountain. At the time the street was more of a wide walkway beside the canal, which was crossed by various stone bridges. The network of canals were covered over, throughout Cape Town, in the 1860s. The Heerengracht river and canal therefore became an underground pipe-line. For many years the street was residential, lined with large oak trees, but by 1850 it had become strongly commercial in character. Richard Stuttaford
Richard Stuttaford (13 June 1870 – 19 October 1945) was a South African businessman and parliamentarian. Life and work Stuttaford was the son of Samson Rickard Stuttaford, the founder of the Stuttafords department store chain. He was educated in England and France and joined the firm Thorne, Stuttaford & Co. in 1892, which his father co-founded with Sir William Thorne. He became the head of the company in 1917. Stuttaford was a member of the Cape Town City Council and the Cape Town Chamber of Commerce, holding the position of the chairman of the latter from 1918 until 1920). He was the chairman of the Association of Chambers of Commerce of South Africa from 1921 until 1923. William Thorne (mayor Of Cape Town)
Sir William Thorne (27 January 1839 – 28 March 1917) was a draper, milliner and businessman in Cape Town. He was also an active civil servant and Mayor of Cape Town. Early life Thorne was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales and as a young man, served his apprenticeship with West End drapers and outfitters and gained his experiences in the drapery business, while he worked at Harvey Nichols in London. In 1860 he emigrated to the Cape Colony. Business life Shortly after his arrival at the Cape, Thorne joined the brothers Samson and William Stuttaford, who operated as drapers and haberdashers named, Povall & Stuttaford, in Darling Street in Cape Town. Adderley is a village and civil parish in the English county of Shropshire, several kilometres north of Market Drayton. It is known as Eldredelei in the Domesday Book.
