Cavendish Square (shopping Centre)
Cavendish Square is a shopping centre in Claremont, Cape Town. It was at the time the largest upscale centre to open in Cape Town and was a project of Stuttafords department store. Original tenants included a full-line Stuttaford's store, a Greatermans department store, whose space was later taken by Garlicks. The centre opened September 7, 1972. It is a popular retail destination in the area, offering a wide range of shops, boutiques, restaurants, and entertainment options. Current anchors include Woolworths South Africa, Woolworths, Cotton On Group, Cotton On, H&M, Mr Price, Pick n Pay Stores, Pick n Pay, and Ster-Kinekor (Including a loyalty club and a D-BOX Technologies, D-BOX cinema). Table Mountain ( naq, Huriǂoaxa, lit= sea-emerging; af, Tafelberg) is a flat-topped mountain forming a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town in South Africa. It is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top. Table Mountain National Park is the most visited national park in South Africa, attracting 4.2 million people every year for various activities. Claremont, Cape Town
Claremont is a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. It is situated 9 kilometres south of the city, and is one of the so-called " Southern Suburbs", it is situated alongside Lansdowne. It is an important commercial and residential area, which is currently experiencing significant growth and development. History Until the arrival of Dutch colonists in 1652, the uncultivated veld of the Cape Peninsula was used by the nomadic Khoisan as grazing for their cattle. Stuttafords
Stuttaford's was a chain of upscale department stores in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia that operated for 159 years from 1858 through 2017. It was nicknamed the "Harrod's of South Africa". At closing it had seven stores in South Africa, two in Botswana, and one in Namibia. It continues to operate in Namibia only. History Founder Samson Rickard Stuttaford opened his first shop in 1857 in Cape Town city centre. His son was Richard Stuttaford (b. 1870) was a prominent businessman and entered the firm in 1886. Garlicks
Garlicks was a department store chain in South Africa. John Garlick started his first store on May 3, 1875, on the corner Bree and Strand Streets, in the central business district of Cape Town. In the 1880s, Garlick expanded with branches in the Transvaal, in Johannesburg and Pretoria, and in Kimberley in the northern Cape Province. In 1892 the Cape Town store was replaced with a far grander store in Adderley Street at Exchange Place, across from Cape Town railway station. It had lifts (elevators), electric lights throughout, and automatic fire sprinklers. A few years later, Garlicks built South Africa's first steel-framed skyscraper, one of nine stories and the tallest building in Cape Colony at the time, and which had the first escalators in what is now South Africa.
