Stuart Smith (politician)
Stuart Tayler Smith (born 1963) is a New Zealand National Party politician who has been a member of the House of Representatives for the Kaikōura electorate since the 2014 general election. Before entering parliament he was a Marlborough grape grower and chairman of the New Zealand Winegrowers Association. Political career Fifth National Government (2014–2017) In 2013 Smith contested the National Party selection for the Kaikōura seat, defeating incumbent Colin King. He was elected at the 2014 election with a majority of 12,570 votes. During the 2014–17 Parliamentary term, Smith served as Deputy Chair of the Primary Production Committee and the Social Services Committee. Colin King
Colin McDonald King (born 19 December 1949) is a New Zealand politician who first entered Parliament in . In late 2013, he lost the National Party selection process for the electorate for the 2014 general election. Early years and family King was born in 1949 in Canterbury. He is a farmer from Marlborough, and has held senior roles in various boards and trusts relating to the agricultural sector. In the 2000 Queen's Birthday Honours, he was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to shearing and the wool industry. King is married and has four adult children. King has had a successful sheep-shearing career and is the only left-handed shearer to ever win the Open Golden Shears in 1982. He went on to win the same title in 1987 and 1988. 2020 New Zealand General Election
The 2020 New Zealand general election was held on Saturday 17 October 2020 to determine the composition of the 53rd parliament. Voters elected 120 members to the House of Representatives, 72 from single-member electorates and 48 from closed party lists. Two referendums, one on the personal use of cannabis and one on euthanasia, were also held on the same day. Official results of the election and referendums were released on 6 November. The governing Labour Party, led by incumbent Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, won the election in a landslide victory against the National Party, led by Judith Collins. Labour won 65 seats, enough for a majority government. It is the first time that a party has won enough seats to govern alone since the mixed-member proportional representation (MMP) system was introduced in 1996. May 2020 New Zealand National Party Leadership Election
An election for the parliamentary leadership of the New Zealand National Party took place in the National Party parliamentary caucus on 22 May 2020. Todd Muller and Nikki Kaye stood against the existing leader Simon Bridges and his deputy leader Paula Bennett following poor polling results. Muller and Kaye won the votes and became the new leader and deputy leader respectively. Todd Muller
Todd Michael Muller (; born 23 December 1968) is a New Zealand politician who served as the Leader of the New Zealand National Party and the Leader of the Opposition from 22 May to 14 July 2020. Muller entered Parliament at the 2014 general election. He was elected as the MP for the Bay of Plenty electorate and has remained its MP since. For his first three years in Parliament, National was in government, and Muller served as the chairperson of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Select Committee. He became the leader of the National Party in May 2020 after successfully challenging then-leader Simon Bridges. The 2018 New Zealand National Party leadership election was held on 27 February 2018 to determine the 12th Leader of the National Party. On 13 February 2018, Bill English announced his resignation as leader of the National Party, effective on 27 February 2018. He left Parliament on 13 March 2018.
