Stuart Robles De Medina
Stuart Sasha Henricus Robles de Medina (December 14, 1930 - May 20, 2006) was a Surinamese sculptor, painter and designer. As a visual artist, Robles de Medina received several large orders, which the result can still be seen in Paramaribo. One of these assignments was the statue of Johan Adolf Pengel on Onafhankelijkheidsplein in 1970, after the death of Pengel. The statue is made of bronze. On June 5, 1974, the statue was unveiled. May 8, 1966, was the 100th anniversary of the States of Suriname. On this occasion, a monument made of bronze by Robles de Medina was unveiled on Spanhoek. Outside these assignments he was also a painter. Most of his works are in private collections. At least one work is in the Suriname Museum in Paramaribo. On April 24, 2006, the Honorary Order of the Yellow Star was awarded by then President Ronald Venetiaan to Stuart Robles de Medina. Paramaribo (; ; nicknamed Par'bo) is the capital and largest city of Suriname, located on the banks of the Suriname River in the Paramaribo District. Johan Adolf Pengel
Johan Adolf "Jopie" Pengel (20 January 1916 – 5 June 1970) was a Surinamese politician, and prime minister of Suriname from 30 June 1963 to 5 March 1969 for the National Party of Suriname (NPS). Biography Pengel was born in Paramaribo on 20 January 1916. He went to law school, but did not graduate. Van Dijck owned a large parcel of ground close to Pengel's home which was rented to poor Afro and Indo-Surinamese people, and started to demand large rent increases. Pengel started a protest movement against Van Dijck, and managed to raise enough money to buy the land. In 1949, he joined the National Party of Suriname, and was elected to the Estates of Suriname. He became one of the most influential politicians in Suriname at that time. In 1952, he became chairman of General Alliance of Labour Unions in Suriname. The Onafhankelijkheidsplein (, Independence Square) is a town square in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. The square is situated in the historical inner city, near the Suriname River and the Presidential Palace of Suriname. Before the independence of Suriname from the Netherlands in 1975, it was also called the ''Oranjeplein'' (Orange Square) and the ''Gouvernementsplein'' (Government Square). Honorary Order Of The Yellow Star
The Honorary Order of the Yellow Star (Dutch language, Dutch: ''Ere-Orde van de Gele Ster'') is the highest state decoration of the Republic of Suriname. The Order was instituted in 1975 at the Suriname#Independence, independence of Suriname and replaced the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Dutch Order of the Netherlands Lion. It is awarded to individuals for their meritorious service to the Surinamese people or nation. Foreigners are also eligible to receive the order. Ronald Venetiaan
Ronald Runaldo Venetiaan (born 18 June 1936) is a former politician who served as the 6th President of Suriname. Biography Venetiaan was born in Paramaribo. In 1955, Venetiaan left Suriname to study mathematics and physics at the University of Leiden. In 1964, he obtained his doctorandus, and returned to Suriname to become a mathematics and physics teacher. In 1973 Venetiaan was Minister of Education for the National Party of Suriname (NPS) in the government of Henck Arron. He was disposed by the 1980 Surinamese coup d'état. Venetiaan decided to teach at the Anton de Kom University. In 1987, Venetiaan returned to politics as the Chairman of the National Party of Suriname, and as the Minister of Education. His first term as president ran from 1991 to 1996, after which he lost in the elections to Jules Wijdenbosch.
