Streetcleaner
''Streetcleaner'' is the debut studio album by English industrial metal band Godflesh. It was released on 13 November 1989 through Earache Records and was reissued with a second disc of previously unreleased material on 21 June 2010. The album is widely acclaimed by critics and is often cited as a landmark release in industrial metal; though not the genre's first release, ''Streetcleaner'' helped define what industrial metal would become. Recorded in three distinct sessions and partially refined from pre-Godflesh demos, ''Streetcleaner'' is a weighty, bleak album that blends heavy metal with industrial music by means of production-emphasised bass, distorted guitar and, most importantly, machine percussion. Unlike many metal albums, guitar is employed to create screeching noise rather than discrete riffs, and the drums and bass are louder than is typical. ''Streetcleaner'' was supported by a series of concerts where Godflesh played alongside Napalm Death, and it was on the Nort ...

Godflesh
Godflesh are an English industrial metal band from Birmingham. The group formed in 1982 under the title Fall of Because but did not release any complete music until 1988 when Justin Broadrick (guitar, vocals and programming) and G. C. Green ( bass) renamed the band and decided to use a drum machine for percussion. Melding heavy metal with industrial music and later with electronic music and dub, Godflesh's sound is widely regarded as a foundational influence on other industrial metal and post-metal acts and as significant to both experimental and extreme metal. The band signed to Earache Records in the late 1980s and released their debut album '' Streetcleaner'' (1989) to contemporary and lasting acclaim. After the release of their sophomore album ''Pure'' (1992) and their major label debut '' Selfless'' (1994), they started experimenting with live drums as well as hip hop and breakbeat sounds. The resulting albums, ''Songs of Love and Hate'' (1996) and ''Us and Them'' ...

Godflesh (EP)
''Godflesh'' is the debut extended play (EP) by English industrial metal band Godflesh. It was originally released in 1988 through Swordfish Records and later saw several reissues on Earache Records with two additional songs. An unexpected underground success, the eponymous EP made it onto the UK Indie Chart and peaked at position 20. Though not supported by any singles or music videos at the time, a fan-made video for "Avalanche Master Song" has since been made official by the band. ''Godflesh'' was recorded and produced over two months in Birmingham by frontman Justin Broadrick and bassist G. C. Green, both of whom had played together in an early version of the band known as Fall of Because. Despite often being overshadowed by the critical success of Godflesh's first full-length studio album, 1989's '' Streetcleaner'', the EP was one of the first industrial metal releases and helped define the genre's sound with programmed drum beats, heavy metal guitar and unusual emphasi ...

Paul Neville (musician)
Paul Neville is an underground experimental guitarist and musician from Birmingham, England. He is best known as the second guitarist in the seminal industrial metal band Godflesh on the second half of their Streetcleaner album and on the Slavestate EP as well as a tour member of the band on respective supporting tours, although Neville had been making music with G. C. Green and later, Justin Broadrick, since 1983 in noise outfit Fall of Because; a band that would break up in 1987 and later reform in 1988 at Broadrickā€™s initiative, now evolved into the industrial noise core that was Godflesh. Neville is noted for his distinctive style, which can be said to be influenced by that of Geordie Walker of Killing Joke, but with an even greater experimental edge and a flair for drawn out improvisation, creating an unusual and original synergy of noise and melody akin to some of the work of Norman Westberg, Justin Broadrick and Robert Hampson. Apart from his work with Fall of Be ...

Slavestate
''Slavestate'' is an EP by industrial metal band Godflesh. It was released in July 1991 through Earache Records. The EP saw the band experimenting with more samples and electronic sounds than their predominantly industrial metal prior releases. Composition With ''Slavestate'', Godflesh sought to diversify their metal-dominated sound by introducing elements of dance music and electronic body music. Still, the music retained the harsh guitar and vocals of frontman Justin Broadrick, as well as the extreme aspects of Godflesh. Ira A. Robbins of ''Trouser Press'' wrote, "The four-song ''Slavestate'' EP finds the band charging full-on into an industrial-dance realm, giving ''Streetcleaners lurch-and-crunch the twist of a rhythmic basis." The EP's title track contains a sample of the song "Stakker Humanoid" by Brian Dougans. On ''Slavestate's'' shift in style, Broadrick said: Release ''Slavestate'' was initially released as a four-song EP. A three-song remix EP titled ''Slavest ...

Released on 24 August 1999 through Alleysweeper and distributed by Martin Atkins' label Invisible Records, ''Life Is Easy'' contains many songs that went on to be rerecorded and turned into Godflesh tracks. Background and content Following the recording of a demo called ''Extirpate'' in 1986, Fall of Because disbanded and reformed in 1988 as Godflesh. ''Life Is Easy'' incorporates many of those early demo tracks, which were recorded when Justin Broadrick was only sixteen. Dimitri Nasrallah of ''Exclaim!'' called Fall of Because's output "eerily ahead of its time". Released eleven years after Fall of Because turned into Godflesh, ''Life Is Easy'' was recorded partially in studio and partially live. The first eight tracks were recorded and mixed at Rich Bitch studios in Birmingham, England in November 1986. ...

The band is known for influencing several sub-genres of extreme music and their songs have been covered by some of the biggest names in heavy metal and other genres. The musical sub-genre of D-beat is named after Discharge and the band's distinctive drumbeat. The band is characterized by a minimalistic approach to music and lyrics, using a heavy, distorted and grinding guitar-driven sound and raw, shouted vocals similar to a political speech, with lyrics on anarchist and pacifist themes, over intense drone-like rhythms. The band's sound has been called a "grave-black aural acid assault."McPadden, Mike. ''If You Like Metallica...: Here Are Over 200 Bands, CDs, Movies, and Other Oddities That You Will Love''. Backbeat Books, 2012. Section on "Discharge". Discharge "paved the way for an astounding array of politically motivated, musically intense and deeply confrontational bands". Discharge was ...

Sonic Youth
Sonic Youth was an American rock band based in New York City, formed in 1981. Founding members Thurston Moore (guitar, vocals), Kim Gordon (bass, vocals, guitar) and Lee Ranaldo (guitar, vocals) remained together for the entire history of the band, while Steve Shelley (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, rounding out the core line-up. Jim O'Rourke (bass, keyboards, guitar) was also a member of the band from 1999 to 2005, and Mark Ibold (guitar, bass) was a member from 2006 to 2011. Sonic Youth emerged from the experimental no wave art and music scene in New York before evolving into a more conventional rock band and becoming a prominent member of the American noise rock scene. Sonic Youth have been praised for having "redefined what rock guitar could do" using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings while preparing guitars with objects like drum sticks and screwdrivers to alter the instruments' timbre. The band was a pivotal influence on the alternat ...

In 1996, the EP was reissued along with the '' Selfless'' (1994) album as the compilation ''Selfless/Merciless''. Content Recorded from 1991 to 1993, ''Merciless'' comprises one rerecorded song, two previously unreleased songs, and a remixed song. The EP's title track, recorded in December 1993, is an updated version of a 1986 Fall of Because song. "Blind" and "Unworthy", tracks 2 and 3 respectively, are both labeled as "Biomechanical Mix" in the EP's liner notes, though no original versions are publicly available. This is the same tag that Godflesh frontman Justin Broadrick applied to the remixes he made for Pantera in 1993. Track 4, "Flowers", is a stripped-down remix, or "demix", of the song "Don't Bring Me Flowers" from Godflesh's 1992 studio album, ''Pure''. Swans (band)
Swans is an American experimental rock band formed in 1982 by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Gira. One of the few acts to emerge from the New York City-based no wave scene and stay intact into the next decade, Swans have become recognized for an ever-changing sound, exploring genres such as noise rock, post-punk, industrial music, industrial and post-rock. Initially, their music was known for its sonic brutality and misanthropic lyrics. Following the addition of singer, songwriter and keyboardist Jarboe in 1986, Swans began to incorporate melody and intricacy into their music. Jarboe remained the band's only constant member except Gira and semi-constant guitarist Norman Westberg until their dissolution in 1997. In 2010, Gira re-formed the band without Jarboe, establishing a stable lineup of musicians which has toured worldwide and released four albums to critical acclaim. This iteration of the group performed its last shows in November 2017, ending the tour ...
