Stonehill Skyhawks Men's Ice Hockey
The Stonehill Skyhawks men's ice hockey team represents Stonehill College in NCAA Division I College ice hockey, ice hockey. On April 5, 2022, the school announced that they were promoting all of their varsity programs to NCAA Division I, Division I for the 2022–23 academic year. History Stonehill began playing varsity hockey in 1978 joining ECAC 3, the lowest level of college hockey at the time. They remained with the conference through its various rebrandings and member changes for over 30 years. During that time the team was not successful, posting just 4 winning seasons in its first 22 campaigns and never making a single postseason appearance. The program's fortunes began to change in 2000 when former National Hockey League, NHL player Scott Harlow was hired to coach the team. The Stonehill Skyhawks are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Stonehill College, located in Easton, Massachusetts, in NCAA sporting competitions. All current Skyhawk athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division I, Division I level, with most being members of the Northeast Conference (NEC). Stonehill has been a member of the NEC since 2022. On April 5, 2022, Stonehill announced it was accepting an invitation to join the NEC at the NCAA Division I level, effective in the fall of 2022. The Walpole Express is a junior, youth, and girls hockey organization based in Walpole, Massachusetts. They have had more than 70 commitments since 2017, and that includes multiple division 1 college committees. The teams play their home games at the Rodman Arena, located just 2 miles from Gillette Stadium. The Midwest Prep Hockey League (abbreviated MPHL) is a highly elite prep school ice hockey league in North America. The Midwest Prep League was founded in 2000; the original six league members were Culver Academies (IN), Gilmour Academy (OH), Lake Forest Academy (IL), Park Tudor School (IN), Shady Side Academy (PA). Since its inception the league has grown to ten Division 1 level prep school teams across the United States and Canada. Goals against average (GAA) also known as "average goals against" or "AGA" is a statistic used in field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and water polo that is the mean of goals allowed per game by a goaltender or goalkeeper (depending on sport). GAA is analogous to a baseball pitcher's earned run average (ERA). In Japanese, the same translation (防御率) is used for both GAA and ERA, because of this. For ice hockey, the goals against average statistic is the number of goals a goaltender allows per 60 minutes of playing time. It is calculated by taking the number of goals against, multiply that by 60 (minutes) and then dividing by the number of minutes played. The modification is used by the NHL since 1965 and the IIHF since 1990. When calculating GAA, overtime goals and time on ice are included, whereas empty net and shootout goals are not. Save percentage (often known by such symbols as SV%, SVS%, SVP, PCT) is a statistic in various goal-scoring sports that track saves as a statistic. In ice hockey and lacrosse, it is a statistic that represents the percentage of shots on goal a goaltender stops. It is calculated by dividing the number of saves by the total number of shots on goal. Although the statistic is called a "percentage", it is often given as a decimal, in the same way as a batting average in baseball. Thus, .933 means a goaltender saved 93.3 percent of all shots they faced. In international ice hockey, a save percentage is expressed as a true percentage, such as 90%.
