Patrick Joseph Leahy (; born March 31, 1940) is an American politician and attorney who is the senior United States senator from Vermont and serves as the president pro tempore of the United States Senate. A member of the Democratic Party, Leahy was first elected in 1974 and is in his eighth term. He is the chair of the Appropriations Committee, and served as president pro tempore from 2012 to 2015 and again since 2021. Upon Representative Don Young's death in March 2022, he became the most senior member of Congress. Patrick Leahy (1806–1875) was the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly. Life Leahy, named for father Patrick Leahy, civil engineer and county surveyor of Cork, was born near Thurles, County Tipperary, on 31 May 1806, and was educated at Maynooth. On his ordination he became Roman Catholic curate of a small parish in the diocese of Cashel. He was soon appointed professor of theology and dcripture in St. Patrick's College at Thurles, and shortly afterwards president of that institution. On 22 August 1850 he was one of the secretaries of the synod or national council of Thurles, and was afterwards appointed parish priest of Thurles and vicar-general of the diocese of Cashel. When the catholic university was opened in Dublin in 1854, he was selected for the office of vice-rector under Dr. J. H. (afterwards Cardinal) Newman, the rector, and filled a professor's chair. Patrick James Leahy (June 1860 – 13 October 1927) was an Irish-born Australian journalist and politician who served as a member of both the Queensland Legislative Council and the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Leahy was born in June 1860 at Schull, County Cork, to Patrick Leahy, farmer, and his wife Mary (née Coghlan). Educated at Schull National school, he came to the Colony of Queensland in 1887 to join his brother, John Leahy and began work as a journalist with the Brisbane Courier. He then moved to Western Queensland where he established ''The Herald'' newspaper in Thargomindah and became secretary of the Bulloo Divisional Board. Pat Leahy (Cork Hurler)
Pat Leahy (4 August 1878 – 1 April 1950) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Dungourney and was a member of the Cork senior inter-county team from 1902 until 1907. Playing career Club Leahy played his club hurling with the famous Dungourney team in Cork and enjoyed some success. He won three county senior championship titles in all, with these victories coming in 1902, 1907 and 1909. Inter-county Leahy first tasted success on the inter-county scene with Cork in 1902 when he lined out in his first Munster final. Limerick provided the opposition, however, Cork were the winners by 2-9 to 1-5 and Leahy collected a Munster winners’ medal. Patrick Leahy (17 March 1892 – 15 May 1966) was an Irish hurler who played as a midfielder for the Tipperary senior team. Leahy made his first appearance for the team during the 1916 championship and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement after the 1927 championship. During that time he won two All-Ireland medals, four Munster medals and one National Hurling League medal. At club level Leahy was a multiple county club championship medalist with Boherlahan–Dualla. Patrick Joseph Leahy (2 September 1917 – 27 November 2009) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong and South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Leahy is one of only two players in league history to switch from the same clubs on three occasions, as he started his career at Geelong, went to South Melbourne, returned to Geelong, then finished up back at South Melbourne. Career Leahy, a ruckman from Cororooke, was first noticed by Footscray, which found him employment in Melbourne. Geelong however had a residential claim to him and it was with that club that he made five appearances in the 1939 VFL season. His performances that season were good enough for many to brand him as a future big name player. Patrick Joseph Leahy (born March 19, 1951) is a former placekicker in the National Football League (NFL) for the New York Jets. He played college soccer at Saint Louis University. Early years Leahy attended Augustinian Academy. He accepted a soccer scholarship from Saint Louis University. As a starting midfielder, he helped lead the school to 4 soccer NCAA finals, winning 3 national championships, while also receiving All-American honors.
