Stickney Memorial Art School
Stickney Memorial Art School, also known as Stickney Art Institute and Stickney Memorial School of Fine Arts, was an art school in operation between c.1912 until 1934 in Pasadena, California. The school was an early precursor to the Norton Simon Museum, founded in 1969. History Upon opening in c. 1912, the school was led by Jean Mannheim and Channel Pickering Townsley. In the early years of the school, Townsley served as director and Mannheim served as the sole instructor and the school offered summer classes with a costumed model posed in the open air and offered outdoor landscape painting in winter. It also offered charcoal drawing, pen-and-ink drawing, and still life drawing, drawing students from all over the country. It was originally located at Stickney Hall, on the corner of Fair Oaks Avenue and Lincoln Avenue in Pasadena (now the 134 and 210 freeways), built and donated by Susan Homer Stickney in memory of her sister. Guy Orlando Rose (3 March 1867 – 17 November 1925) was an American Impressionist painter and California resident, who received national recognition in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Early life and education Guy Orlando Rose was born March 3, 1867, in San Gabriel, California. He was the seventh child of Leonard John Rose and Amanda Jones Rose. His father was a prominent California senator. He and his wife raised their large family on an expansive Southern California ranch and vineyard – the San Gabriel Valley town of Rosemead bears the family name. Lucile Lloyd, also known as Lucile Lloyd Brown, Lucila Lloyd Nulty (August 28, 1894 – February 25, 1941) was an American muralist, illustrator, and decorative painter. In 1937, Lloyd worked with the Works Progress Administration's Federal Arts Project to paint three murals in the assembly room in the state building in Los Angeles, California. Early life Lloyd was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her parents were Mary Alice (Holcomb) and Harry Kensington Lloyd. She apprenticed in her father's stained-glass and textile design studio. Gordon Bernie Kaufmann (19 March 1888 – 1 March 1949) was an English-born American architect mostly known for his work on the Hoover Dam. Early life On 19 March 1888, Kaufmann was born in Forest Hill, London, England. Education Kaufmann attended Whitgift School in south Croydon, and went on to graduate from the London Polytechnic Institute, circa 1908. Kaufmann then moved to Vancouver in British Columbia, where he spent the next six years. Career During Kaufmann's early career, he did much work in the Mediterranean Revival Style, which had become popular at that time. Roland Coate (December 5, 1890 – October 17, 1958) was an American architect. He designed many houses and buildings in California, three of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Early life Coate was born on December 5, 1890 in Richmond, Indiana. He attended Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana from 1910 to 1912, and he graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in 1914. Career Coate worked as a draftsman at the Manhattan firm founded by two fellow Cornell School of Architecture alumni, Trowbridge and Ackerman. Grace Richardson Clements (1905–1969) was an American painter, mosaicist, and art critic. She was active as an artist in the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s. Early life and education Clements was born in Oakland, California on June 8, 1905. She married Traverse Clements in 1923. They divorced in 1928. She studied art under Kenneth Hayes Miller and Boardman Robinson in New York City from 1925 to 1930.
