Stichaeidae
Stichaeidae, the pricklebacks or shannies, are a family of marine ray-finned fishes in the suborder Zoarcoidei of the order Scorpaeniformes. Most species are found in the North Pacific Ocean with a few in the North Atlantic Ocean. Taxonomy Stichaeidae was first proposed as a family in 1864 by the American zoologist Theodore Gill, although he called it the Stichaeoidae. The 5th edition of ''Fishes of the World'' classifies this family within the suborder Zoarcoidei, within the order Scorpaeniformes. Other authorities classify this family in the infraorder Zoarcales wihin the suborder Cottoidei of the Perciformes because removing the Scorpaeniformes from the Perciformes renders that taxon non monophyletic. ''Fishes of the World'' mentions six subfamilies but does not assign genera to the subfamilies while other authorities split the Cebidichthyidae, Opisthocentridae, Lumpenidae and Neozoarcidae from the Sitchaeidae as valid families. The genera which are classified within the fami ...

Stichaeinae
Stichaeinae is a subfamily of marine ray-finned fishes, Taxonomy (biology), classified within the family Stichaeidae, the pricklebacks or shannies. These fishes are found in the North Pacific, Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans. Taxonomy Stichaeinae contains the type taxon of the family Stichaeidae, the Arctic shanny (''Stichaeus punctatus''), and the name is based on Theodore Gill’s 1864 name for the family. The name of the subfamily comes from that of its type genus ''Stichaeus'', which means “set in a row”, which may be an allusion to the row of black spots on the dorsal fin, dorsal fins of the species in that genus. Genera Stichaeinae contains the following genera: ''Dinogunellus'' Solomon Herzenstein, Herzenstein, 1890 is treated as a vaild genus by ''Catalog of Fishes'' but ''Fishbase'' does not and treats the 3 species classified within it as belonging to the genus ''Stichaeus''. Characteristics Stichaeinae pricklebacks are less elongated in shape than most of the o ...

Askoldia
''Askoldia'' is a monotypic genus of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Stichaeidae, the pricklebacks and shannies. Its only species is ''Askoldia variegata'' which is found in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Taxonomy ''Askoldia'' was first proposed as a monospecific genus in 1910 by the Russian ichthyologist Mikhail Nikolaevich Pavlenko when he described its only species ''A. variegatus'', with its type locality given as near Askold Island in Peter the Great Bay in the Sea of Japan, Russia. The genus is placed in the subfamily Opisthocentrinae within the family Stichaeidae by some authorities, while other classify this taxon as a valid family, Opisthocentridae. Some authorities also recognise two subspecies, the nominate ''A.v. variegata'' and ''A.v. knipowitschi'' but the validity of this subsepcies is not generally accepted. ''Askoldia'' is considered to be closely related to '' Kasatkia''. Etymology ''Askoldia'' is named after its type locality, Askold Islan ...

Ulvaria (fish)
The radiated shanny (''Ulvaria subbifurcata'') is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Stichaeidae, the pricklebacks and shannies. It is the only species in the monotypic genus ''Ulvaria''. This fish is found in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean. Taxonomy The radiated shanny was first formally described in as ''Pholis subfurcatus'' in 1839 by the American naturalist and physician David Humphreys Storer. Storer gave its type locality as the “intertidal zone” at Nahant, Massachusetts. In 1896 David Starr Jordan and Barton Warren Evermann placed ''P. subfurcatus'' in the monospecific genus ''Ulvaria''. This taxon is placed in the subfamily Stichaeinae within the Stichaeidae. Description The radiated shanny has an elongate, rather robust, eel shaped body. The terminal mouth has jaws of the similar length with small teeth. The head is rounded and it has large eyes. The long dorsal fin is confluent with the caudal fin, a membrane connects the two but the ...

Stichaeus
''Stichaeus'' is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Stichaeidae, the pricklebacks or shannies. These fishes are mainly found in the North Pacific Ocean with one species in the Arctic and western North Atlantic Oceans. Taxonomy ''Stichaeus'' was first proposed as a monospecific genus in 1836 by the Danish zoologist Johan Reinhardt with ''Blennius punctatus'', which was described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1780 from western Greenland, designated as the type species. This genus is classified within the subfamily Stichaeinae of the Zoarcoid family Stichaeidae. Species ''Stichaeus'' contains 6 extant species and 2 known extinct species, as follows: † means extinct Etymology The genus name, ''Stichaeus'' means "to set in a row", and is presumed to refer to the row of 5 or 6 circular spots on the dorsal fin. Characteristics ''Stichaeus'' species have moderately elongated, laterally compressed bodies which are covered in tiny cycloid scales, altho ...

Ernogrammus
''Ernogrammus'' is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Stichaeidae, the pricklebacks or shannies.} These fishes are found in the North Pacific Ocean. Taxonomy ''Ernogrammus'' was first proposed as a genus in 1898 by the American ichthyologists David Starr Jordan and Barton Warren Evermann with ''Stichaeus enneagrammus'', which had been described by Rudolf Kner in 1868 from Decastris Bay on the Tatar Strait in the northern Sea of Japan, as the only species in this monotypic genus. ''S. enneagrammus'' is now considered to be a junior synonym of Schlegel's ''Stichaeus hexagrammus''. This genus is classified within the subfamily Stichaeinae of the Zoarcoid family Stichaeidae. Species ''Ernogrammus'' contains 3 species: * '' Ernogrammus hexagrammus'' (Schlegel, 1845) (Six-lined prickleback) * '' Ernogrammus walkeri'' Follett & Powell, 1988 (Masked prickleback) * '' Ernogrammus zhirmunskii'' Markevich & Kharin, 2011 (Seven-lined prickleback) Etymol ...

Eulophiidae
Eulophiidae, the spinous eelpouts, is a small family of marine ray-finned fishes classified within the suborder Zoarcoidei of the order Scorpaeniformes. They are found in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Taxonomy Eulophiidae was first proposed as a family in 2013 by the Korean biologists Hyuck Joon Kwun and Jin-Koo Kim for the genus ''Eulophias'', which had previously been classified as belonging to the family Stichaeidae. Kwun and Kim argued that the molecular phylogenetics showed that ''Eulophias'' was only distantly related to the species classified within the Stichaeidae. This was suuported by further molecular phylogenetic analyses published in 2014. and the validity of the family has been accepted by the 5th edition of ''Fishes of the World'', by ''FishBase'' and by the '' Catalog of Fishes''. The type species of the family, '' Eulophias tanneri'', was described from Japan by Hugh McCormick Smith in 1902, Smith thought that his new species was a blenny but was different ...

Opisthocentrinae
Opisthocentrinae is a subfamily of marine ray-finned fishes, classified within the family Stichaeidae, the pricklebacks or shannies. These fishes are found in the North Pacific Ocean. Taxonomy Opisthocentrinae was first put forward as a subfamily in 1898 by the American ichthyologists David Starr Jordan and Barton Warren Evermann. The 5th edition of Fishes of the World places this subfamily in the family Stichaeidae but other authorities treat this taxon as valid family within the suborder Zoarcoidei, either in the Scorpaeniformes, or the Perciformes. The name of the subfamily is taken from its type genus ''Opisthocentrus'' which is a combination of ''opistho'', meaning "behind", and ''kentron'', which means "thorn" or "spine", an allusion to the spines on the 11th and 12th rays in the dorsal fin of ''O. ocellatus''. Etymology ''Opisthocentrus'' is a combination of ''opistho'', meaning "behind", and ''kentron'', which means "thorn" or "spine", an allusion to the spines on t ...

Plagiogrammus
The crisscross prickleback (''Plagiogrammus hopkinsii'') is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Stichaeidae, the pricklebacks and shannies. It is the only species in the monotypic genus ''Plagiogrammus''. This fish is found in the eastern Pacific Ocean off California. Taxonomy The crisscross prickleback was first formally described in 1894 by the American ichthyologist Tarleton Hoffman Bean with its type locality given as Monterey, California. Bean placed his new species in a new monotypic genus, ''Plagiogrammus''. This taxon is classified within the subfamily Stichaeinae of the Zoarcoid family Stichaeidae. Etymology The crisscross pickleback's generic name, is a compound of ''plagio'', meaning "slanting", and ''grammus'', meaning line. Bean did not explain what this alluded to but it may refer to the upper lateral line “curves very slightly” over the pectoral fin. The specific name honors Timothy Hopkins, who founded the Seaside Laboratory a ...

Arctic Shanny
The Arctic shanny (''Stichaeus punctatus'') is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Stichaeidae, the pricklebacks and shannies. This species occurs in the North Pacific, Arctic and western North Atlantic Oceans. Taxonomy The Arctic shanny was first formally described in 1780 as ''Blennius punctatus'' by the Danish zoologist Johan Christian Fabricius, giving its type locality as Western Greenland. When Johan Reinhardt proposed the genus '' Stichaeus'' he designated ''Blennius punctatus'' as its type species. The specific name ''punctatus'' means spotted, a reference to the 5 or 6 spots on the dorsal fin. Subspecies Some authorities recognise two subspecies of the Arctic shanny: The nominate subspecies is found in the northern western Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and is sympatric with ''S.p. pulcherrimus'' in the Sea of Okhtosk and this subspecies may be a valid, distinct species. Description The Arctic shanny has the moderately elongated, laterally comp ...

Zoarcoidei
Zoarcoidei is a suborder of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the order Scorpaeniformes. The suborder includes the wolffishes, gunnels and eelpouts. The suborder includes about 400 species. These fishes predominantly found in the boreal seas of the northern hemisphere but they have colonised the southern hemisphere. Taxonomy Zoarcoidei was first proposed as a taxonomic grouping by the American zoologist Theodore Gill in 1893 as the superfamily Zoarceoidea. The 5th edition of ''Fishes of the World'' classifies the Zoarcoidei as a suborder within the order Scorpaeniformes. Other authorities classify this taxon as the infraorder Zoarcales wihin the suborder Cottoidei of the Perciformes because removing the Scorpaeniformes from the Perciformes renders that taxon non monophyletic. The monophyly of this grouping has still not been fully ascertained but it is generally accepted that the most basal family is Bathymasteridae.
