Steve Gittins
Stephen Gittins (29 August 1959 – 20 February 2013) was an English professional darts player. Career Gittins played twice at the BDO World Darts Championship. In 1989, he beat Finland's Kexi Heinäharju in the first round but lost in the second round to five-time World Champion Eric Bristow. He returned to the Lakeside a year later and again reached the second round, beating Australian Wayne Weening in round one, but again lost in the second round to Bristow. Gittins also played twice at the Winmau World Masters, reaching the quarter-finals in 1985. Gittins also won three open tournaments, winning the Welsh Open and Swedish Open in 1988 and then the Finnish Open in 1989. Gittins disappeared from the scene after the 1990 BDO World Darts Championship but briefly made a comeback at the 2005 UK Open (darts), PDC UK Open. UK Open (darts)
The Cazoo UK Open is a ranking major darts tournament held annually at the Butlins Minehead Resort by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) in England. Often referred to as the "FA Cup of darts", the UK Open replicates the abolition of seedings, elimination play, and fixtures determined via open draw. One-hundred-and-sixty players compete in the multi-board event over eight-stages before the PDC’s Top 32 enter the tournament in the fourth round. The tournament has a prize fund of £450,000; the victor’s prize is £100,000. History From 2003 to 2013, the UK Open took place in June each year at the Reebok Stadium, in Bolton. 1990 BDO World Darts Championship
The 1990 Embassy World Darts Championship was held at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green, Surrey from 5–13 January 1990. It saw then-unknown Phil Taylor win the first of sixteen world titles, beating his mentor Eric Bristow 6-1 in sets in the final, with Taylor playing in his first ever World Championship at the age of 29. Taylor beat Russell Stewart, Dennis Hickling, Ronnie Sharp and Cliff Lazarenko en route to the final. Defending champion Jocky Wilson fell at the quarter-final stage, losing to Mike Gregory. The event also saw America's Paul Lim hit the first nine-dart finish at the World Championship in his second round match with Ireland's Jack McKenna, receiving £52,000 for his efforts. Winmau World Masters
The World Masters is one of the longest-running and most prestigious of the BDO/WDF tournaments, which began in 1974. The tournament is sponsored by darts board manufacturer, Winmau. The World Masters was unusual in darts in that its sets are the best of 3 legs (first to 2) rather than the standard best of 5 legs (first to 3). It was previously the final leg of the BDO's Grand Slam title of televised majors, along with the BDO World Darts Championship, International Darts League and World Darts Trophy, until the latter two tournaments were axed in 2008. The champion is referred to as the World Master. After the collapse of the British Darts Organisation in September 2020, the World Darts Federation announced plans to launch the WDF World Masters. Wayne Dirk Weening (born 15 March 1965) is an Australian former professional darts player who competed in the 1980s and 90s. Career Weening made his debut in 1989 BDO World Darts Championship reaching the last 16 by beating Cliff Lazarenko before losing to Bob Anderson. Eric Bristow
Eric John Bristow, (25 April 1957 – 5 April 2018), nicknamed "The Crafty Cockney", was an English professional darts player. He was ranked World No. 1 by the World Darts Federation a record five times, in 1980, 1981 and 1983–1985. He was a five-time World Champion, a five-time World Masters Champion a four-time World Cup singles champion and 2-time champion of the News of the World Darts Championship. He won 22 WDF and BDO Major titles, he won 62 individual career titles, added to 20 titles in team events, winning 82 overall. In the 1980s, Bristow's skill and personality helped turn darts into a worldwide spectator sport. Keijo "Kexi" Heinäharju (born 2 February 1955) is a Finnish former professional darts player. Darts career Heinäharju won the 1981 Finland Open, beating fellow Finn Risto Nurmela in the final.
