John Sterne (bishop Of Dromore)
John Sterne (1660–1745) was an Irish Church of Ireland clergyman, bishop of Dromore from 1713 and then bishop of Clogher from 1717. Life The only son of John Stearne, by his wife Dorothy, daughter of Charles Ryves (died 1700), examiner in the chancery of Ireland, he was born in Dublin. He was educated at the cathedral school under Mr. Ryder, and entered Trinity College, Dublin, on 2 April 1674, his tutor being Philip Barbour. He graduated B.A. 11 February 1677, M.A. 12 July 1681, and D.D. in July 1705. Having been ordained deacon in October 1682 by Anthony Dopping, bishop of Meath, Sterne served for a time as his domestic chaplain. About 1688 he was made vicar of Trim, County Meath; in October 1692 he was instituted to the rectory of Clonmacduffe, and in June 1703 to that of Killary, both in the diocese of Meath. Teresa Sterne
Teresa Sterne (also known as Teresa Rosenbaum and Tracey Sterne) (March 29, 1927 – December 10, 2000) was an American concert pianist and record producer. Sterne's performance career began at the age of twelve when she appeared with the NBC Symphony and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Following her performance career, Sterne was director of Nonesuch Records from 1965 through 1979. Early life Sterne was born in Brooklyn to a musical family. Gertrude Bloede
Gertrude Bloede (10 August 1845 – 14 August 1905) was a United States poet. She used the pen name “Stuart Sterne” for her publications. Biography Bloede was born in Dresden, Germany. Her father and mother were refugees who fled Germany after the revolution of 1848. The family arrived in the United States in 1850, where her mother, Marie Bloede, became noted for her poetry and prose, and her father, Gustavus Bloede, edited the ''New-Yorker Demokrat'', a Republican newspaper. Her parents were good friends of poet and literary critic Bayard Taylor, at whose home they met Edmund Clarence Stedman, Richard Henry Stoddard, Thomas Bailey Aldrich and other well-known poets and authors of the United States. Simon Sterne
Simon Sterne (born June 23 1839, Philadelphia – died September 22 1901, New York City) was an American lawyer and economist. Biography He studied at the University of Heidelberg, and then graduated from the law department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1859. He was admitted to the bar of New York in 1860, and established himself in practice in New York City. He represented many corporate interests, and paid special attention to real estate and constitutional law. In 1862, he was elected lecturer on political economy in Cooper Union. He was on the staff of the ''Commercial Advertiser'' from 1863 to 1864, was a founder of the American Free-trade League in 1864, and in 1865 published the ''New York Social Science Review'', co-founded and edited with Alexander del Mar. Richard Sterne (born 27 August 1981) is a South African professional golfer who plays on both the European and Sunshine Tours. Life and career Sterne was born in Pretoria and attended St Alban's College for high school. He was runner-up in the Boys' 15–17 Division at the 1999 World Junior Golf Championships and turned pro in 2001. He played on the European Challenge Tour in 2002 and graduated to membership of the main European Tour in 2003. He won his first European Tour title at the 2004 Open de Madrid. Richard Sterne (bishop)
Richard Sterne (c. 1596–1683) was a Church of England priest, Archbishop of York from 1664 to 1683. Life He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated MA in 1618, BD in 1625 and DD in 1635. He was elected a fellow of Benet College (now Corpus Christi College), Cambridge in 1623 and then served as Master of Jesus College, Cambridge from 1634. Around 1633, he became chaplain to Archbishop Laud. From 1642, he held the rectories of Yeovilton and Harleton. A Royalist, he was arrested and imprisoned by the Parliamentarians later the same year. In 1644, he was formally dismissed as Master of Jesus and, in 1645, he lost his rectories, although he was released from prison. Maurice Sterne
Maurice Sterne ( lv, Moriss Šterns, 1877 or 1878 – July 23, 1957), was an American sculptor and painter remembered today for his association with philanthropist Mabel Dodge Luhan, to whom he was married from 1916 to 1923. Biography Sterne was born in Liepāja, Latvia, the youngest of five children to an Orthodox Jewish family living in the port city of Libau (now Liepāja), Latvia, when it was part of the Russian Empire. After Sterne's father died, his mother moved the rest of the family to Moscow. In 1889 Sterne, his mother and sister were forced to leave Moscow, and sailed to New York City. Laurence Sterne (24 November 1713 – 18 March 1768), was an Anglo-Irish novelist and Anglican cleric who wrote the novels ''The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman'' and ''A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy'', published sermons and memoirs, and indulged in local politics. He grew up in a military family travelling mainly in Ireland but briefly in England. Adolphus Sterne
Nicholas Adolphus Sterne (April 5, 1801 – March 27, 1852) served three terms in the Texas House of Representatives and one term in the Texas State Senate. He immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1817, living in Louisiana for ten years. In 1826, he moved to Nacogdoches, Texas, where he operated a mercantile and smuggled weapons for the colonist who wished to rebel against Mexico. His position as a Freemason helped save him from a death sentence, and Sterne went on to finance the two companies of men known as the New Orleans Greys, to assist in fighting in the Texas Revolution.
