Sterling High School is a high school, located at 1608 Fourth Ave in Sterling, Illinois. It is the high school within Sterling Public Schools. Activities Sterling High School's athletic teams are known as the "Golden Warriors." Sterling High School is a member of the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference in the West division. Sterling is also member of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA), which governs most sports and competitive activities in the state. For 27 consecutive years, Sterling High School's Group Interpretation team has competed in the IHSA Drama/Group Interpretation state finals. Since 2022, the team has been the sectional champions. Sterling is a city in Whiteside County, Illinois, Whiteside County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,782 at the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, down from 15,370 in 2010. Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference
The Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference was a high-school athletic conference with ten high schools in northern Illinois. The conference began competing during the 2010–2011 academic year and dissolved following the 2018–2019 academic year. In many respects, including membership and organization, the NI-Big 12 was much like a reboot of the old North Central Illinois Conference (NCIC). Six of the schools were former members of the North Central Illinois Conference (1929-2011), and the conference was divided into two divisions, much as the NCIC was for decades. The former NCIC schools were Geneseo, LaSalle-Peru, Sterling, Ottawa, and Rochelle. Also, there were five schools that were members of the Western Sun Conference (2007-2010). The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is an association that regulates competition of interscholastic sports and some interscholastic activities at the high school level for the state of Illinois. It is a charter member of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The IHSA regulates 14 sports for boys, 15 sports for girls, and eight co-educational non-athletic activities. More than 760 public and private high schools in the state of Illinois are members of the IHSA. The Association's offices are in Bloomington, Illinois. Lew Andreas
Lewis P. Andreas (February 25, 1895 – June 16, 1983) was an American football and basketball coach and college athletic administrator. He was the head coach for Syracuse University's men's basketball and football programs beginning in the 1920s. The Sterling, Illinois native played baseball, basketball and football at University of Illinois as a freshman before transferring to Syracuse. He then played football and baseball, but not basketball, for the Orangemen (now Orange) before embarking on his coaching career. Andreas coached the Orangemen basketball team from 1924 to 1950, except one year World War II when the team was suspended due to travel restrictions. He guided the Orangemen basketball program to a 358–134 (.726) overall record in 24 years.
