Stephen Welch (June 14, 1824 - 30 March, 1906) was an American soldier who received the Medal of Honor for actions during the American Civil War. The medal was presented to Welch on 13 April, 1894 for actions as a sergeant with the 154th New York Volunteer Infantry at the Battle of Rocky Face Ridge, Dug Gap, Georgia on 8 May, 1864. Welch was born in Groton, New York and is buried in Allegany, New York Allegany is a town in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. The population was 7,493 at the 2020 census. The Medal of Honor (MOH) is the United States Armed Forces' highest military decoration and is awarded to recognize American soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, guardians and coast guardsmen who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor. The 154th New York Infantry Regiment (aka, "The Hardtack Regiment") was an infantry regiment in the U.S. Army during the American Civil War. Service The 154th New York Infantry was organized at Albion, New York beginning August 19, 1862, and mustered in for three years service on September 24, 1862, under the command of Colonel Addison G. Rice. Training and initial deployment The regiment served in the eastern theater with the Army of the Potomac (AoP) until it was sent west as part of Hooker's reinforcement of the Army of the Cumberland (AoC). Battle Of Rocky Face Ridge
The Battle of Rocky Face Ridge was fought May 7–13, 1864, in Whitfield County, Georgia, during the Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War. The Union army was led by Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman and the Confederate army by Gen. Joseph E. Johnston. Confederates were forced to evacuate their strong position due to a Union flanking movement. Battle General Johnston had entrenched his army on the long, steep Rocky Face Ridge and eastward across Crow Valley. When Sherman approached, he demonstrated against this position with two columns while he sent a third one through Snake Creek Gap, to the south, to hit the Western & Atlantic Railroad at Resaca. Groton is a town in Tompkins County, New York, United States. The population was 5,950 at the 2010 census. The name is taken from Groton, Massachusetts. The Town of Groton contains a village, also called Groton. The town is in the northeast corner of the county and is northeast of Ithaca. As well as a village, the Town of Groton also includes a former school, Groton High School, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. History Groton was in the former Central New York Military Tract.
