Stephan Micus
Stephan Micus (; born 19 January 1953) is a German musician and composer, whose musical style is heavily influenced by his study of traditional instruments and musical techniques from Japan, India, South America, and other countries. With the exception of his album ''The Music of Stones'' (1989), he plays all the instruments on his recordings, combining styles from different countries and using the instruments in unprecedented ways in each of his pieces. He often uses layers of a single instrument to create unusual combinations of sounds. He is one of the few ECM Records artists whose records are not produced by Manfred Eicher. He has mixed instruments from around the world, or used whatever was at hand: stones, ordinary flowerpots tuned with water, and his voice—singing improvised syllables over ten years before others made this approach fashionable. Zither
Zithers (; , from the Greek word ''cithara'') are a class of stringed instruments. Historically, the name has been applied to any instrument of the psaltery family, or to an instrument consisting of many strings stretched across a thin, flat body. This article describes the latter variety. Zithers are typically played by strumming or plucking the strings with the fingers or a plectrum. In the Hornbostel–Sachs classification system, the term refers to a larger family of similarly shaped instruments that also includes the hammered dulcimer family and piano and a few rare bowed instruments like the bowed psaltery, bowed dulcimer, and streichmelodion. Like an acoustic guitar or lute, a zither's body serves as a resonating chamber (sound box), but, unlike guitars and lutes, a zither lacks a distinctly separate neck assembly. ''The Garden of Mirrors'' is an album by Stephan Micus recorded between 1995–1996 and released on ECM (record label), ECM the following year. Background Like his previous efforts, Micus plays every instrument via overdubbing: he also provides all of the voices for the 20-man chorus in three of the tracks. Micus's inspiration for this album was two traditional low-range West African harps that he studied in Gambia: the ''bolombatto'' and the ''sinding''. When playing these two instruments, Micus claims to have identified with early African American music, which they influenced, claiming that the bassline in jazz was influenced by these harps. Athos (album)
''Athos'' is a 1994 album by Stephan Micus that was released on ECM. Based on a three-day visit to Mount Athos, Micus tries to capture his experiences with the Greek Orthodox liturgy he experienced in the monasteries there, framing it with pieces that evoke his emotions at going to and leaving the isolated peninsula. Between them he recreates the liturgical experience of the services during his stay, in six alternating pieces of night and day. As in his other works, Micus uses a combination of traditional instruments from various cultures to capture the feel of the monastery. These include: the '' sattar'' (a bowed 10-string instrument used by the Uyghur), the '' shakuhachi'' (a Japanese bamboo flute), the ''suling'' (a reed flute from Bali), the '' ney'' (a Middle Eastern flute), and 22 flowerpots, filled with water, which he plays with his hands and with mallets.
