Stefano Tamburini
Stefano Tamburini (18 August 1955 – April 1986) was an Italian graphic artist, comics author and magazine publisher. Tamburini is primarily known as co-creator of the comic book character RanXerox, with Tanino Liberatore. Along with Andrea Pazienza, he is considered one of the most brilliant Italian comics authors from his generation. Biography Born in Rome, Tamburini started writing in 1974. From 1975 to 1977 he worked for Stampa Alternativa, an independent publishing venture, designing books and leaflets. He also co-founded the magazines ''Combinazioni'' (1974), ''Cannibale'' (1977) and ''Frigidaire'' (1980). Tamburini's first comics character, ''Fuzzy Rat'', was published in ''Combinazioni''. In 1978 Tamburini, together with artist Tanino Liberatore, created the comic book character RanXerox, a mechanical creature made from Xerox photocopier parts. RanXerox
''RanXerox'' is an Italian science fiction graphic novel series by Stefano Tamburini and Tanino Liberatore, two Italian artists who had worked on such magazines as ''Cannibale'' and ''Frigidaire''. Conceived as a bizarre antihero, RanXerox was a mechanical creature made from Xerox photocopier parts. At first (1978, in Italian, in ''Cannibale'') the name was "Rank Xerox", identical to that of a joint venture between the Xerox Corporation of the U.S. and the Rank Organisation of the U.K., the latter of which manufactures and markets Xerox equipment in Europe. Due to a threatened lawsuit by Rank Xerox for using their trademarked name, Tamburini changed it to "RanXerox" (1980, also in Italian, in ''Frigidaire''). The name "Ranx" has also been used in some cases. The first time RanXerox was published in English was in the July 1983 issue of '' Heavy Metal''. Tanino Liberatore
Gaetano Liberatore (born 12 April 1953), better known as Tanino Liberatore, is an Italian comics author and illustrator. His best known fictional character is RanXerox. Life and work Born in Quadri (province of Chieti), Liberatore went to high school in Pescara where he met comics artist Andrea Pazienza. He later finished his architectural studies at the University of Rome. From 1974 to 1978, he designed record covers for RCA. In 1978 he met Stefano Tamburini and published his first work in Tamburini's comics magazine '' Cannibale''. In 1978 RanXerox was born, a cyborg-punk, ultra strong creature created by Tamburini. Several stand alone hardcover albums ensued, translated in several languages. In 1980 he involved in the foundation of the magazine ''Frigidaire''. Andrea Pazienza (; 23 May 1956 – 16 June 1988), was an Italian comics artist and painter. Biography Early life Pazienza was born in San Benedetto del Tronto, province of Ascoli Piceno, in 1956. Growing up in his father's town of San Severo in Apulia, he enrolled in 1974 at the Department of Arts, Music, and Entertainment of the University of Bologna. Career He made his debut in the spring of 1977 in the magazine ''Alteralter'' with his first comic story, "Le straordinarie avventure di Pentothal" (Pentothal's extraordinary adventures), the surrealistic and psychedelic story of an alter ego named after the sedative Penthothal. He later participated in such editorial experiences as ''Cannibale'', ''Il Male'', and ''Frigidaire'', of which he was one of the founders. ''Frigidaire'' was a comics magazine published in Rome, Italy. The magazine had significant effects on graphic design, illustrations and written speech in the country during the 1980s. In 2008 it folded, and from 2009 it became a supplement of '' Liberazione'', a defunct communist newspaper. History and profile ''Frigidaire'' was established in 1980. The first issue appeared in November. The founders were Vincenzo Sparagna, Stefano Tamburini, Filippo Scòzzari, Andrea Pazienza, Massimo Mattioli, and Tanino Liberatore. The magazine had its headquarters in Rome. In addition to cartoons ''Frigidaire'' featured avant-garde reportages and interviews and covers articles on visual art. Amelia "Emi" Fontana (born 1961 in Milan) is a cultural producer, art curator and writer based in Los Angeles. Fontana studied art history at the University La Sapienza in Rome, with a focus on the Venetian Renaissance. She came of age in the late seventies when Italy was experiencing a renaissance of creativity and was considered a laboratory of new ideas and talents. During this time Fontana was immersed in circles of artists, musicians and writers.
