State Route 125 (Alabama)
State Route 125 (SR 125) is a state highway in Coffee and Pike counties in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Alabama. The southern terminus of the highway is at U.S. Route 84 (US 84) and SR 87 in Elba. The northern terminus of the route is at an intersection with US 231 south of Brundidge. Route description SR 125 begins at US 84/SR 87 (also unsigned SR 12) in Elba, northeast of the downtown area of the city. Heading northeast, SR 125 travels through Victoria and intersects SR 167. It continues to the northeast and then reaches its northern terminus, an intersection with US 231 ( internally designated as SR 53) south of Brundidge. Elba, Alabama
Elba is a city in and the county seat of Coffee County, Alabama, United States. It is the official seat, although there are two county courthouses, with the other one being located in the town of Enterprise. At the time of the 2010 U.S. census, Elba's population was 3,940. Elba is part of the Enterprise micropolitan statistical area. History The town which eventually became Elba originated near a ferry across the Pea River in the early 1830s. Originally called Bridgeville, a U.S. post office was established in the town by 1841. In 1851, a lottery to determine a new name for the town was held. One citizen had been reading a biography of Napoleon Bonaparte, and his suggestion of "Elba" as its name was the winner when it was drawn from a hat before any of the other suggestions. Elba became the county seat of Coffee County in 1852. A logging railroad first reached Elba on March 20, 1892, with the first permanent rail line arriving in October 1898. Victoria, Alabama
Victoria, also known as Smut Eye or Buzbeeville, is an unincorporated community in Coffee County, Alabama, United States. Victoria is located along Alabama State Route 125, northeast of Elba. History The community was originally known as Smut Eye, as tradition states the local men would stand around a fire outside the local store and become covered in soot. Later, the name was changed to Buzbeeville in honor of William Buzbee, who served as postmaster. Finally, the name was changed to Victoria, in honor of Victoria Winslow, a local citizen. A post office operated under the name Smut Eye from 1850 to 1853, under the name Buzbeeville from 1853 to 1868, and under the name Victoria from 1868 to 1927. Brundidge, Alabama
Brundidge is the second-largest city in Pike County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,076 at the 2010 census, down from 2,341 in 2000. The city was once a major producer of peanut butter. Brundidge holds a Peanut Butter Festival during the last Saturday of each October, which includes live music, a recipe contest, and a parade. The city has a large number of antique stores in its historic downtown. History The town was founded prior to the Civil War by George C. Collier, who established a trading post and saloon. First called "Collier's Store", the town changed its name around 1854 to honor James M. Brundidge, a prominent citizen and founder of the local Masonic lodge. Coffee County, Alabama
Coffee County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 53,465. Its name is in honor of General John Coffee. Coffee County comprises the Enterprise, Micropolitan Statistical Area, which was originally Enterprise–Ozark micropolitan area in 2010 censuses before being split off. It was originally included in the Dothan-Enterprise-Ozark, Combined Statistical Area in its 2012 statistics but the area in its recent years has been separated from the Dothan metropolitan area and Ozark micropolitan area in later censuses and is its own primary statistical area now.
