State Correctional Institution – Cambridge Springs
State Correctional Institution (SCI) Cambridge Springs is a minimum-security correctional facility for females in Cambridge Springs, in Crawford County in northwestern Pennsylvania. The majority of the inmates housed here are nearing their release from prison. Creation of SCI Cambridge Springs In 1990, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania purchased the former Polish National Alliance College campus and converted into a minimum-security women's institution. SCI Cambridge Springs opened in 1992, with the transfer of inmates from SCI Waynesburg. Facility design The existing buildings at SCI Cambridge Springs were built in the 1930s and 1940s; however, construction of new housing units and renovations have since been completed. There are 125 Acres at SCI Cambridge Springs, 40 of those being under the perimeter fence. Cambridge Springs is a Borough (Pennsylvania), borough with Home Rule Municipality (Pennsylvania), home rule status in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,511 at the 2020 census, down from 2,595 at the 2010 census. History The village of Cambridge was settled in 1822 and was named for the town of Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was incorporated into the borough (Pennsylvania), borough of Cambridgeboro on April 3, 1866.Bates, p. 493. In the late 19th century, Cambridgeboro was known for its mineral springs. The discovery of the springs eventually led to renaming the borough to Cambridge Springs on April 1, 1897. It was a resort town featuring a variety of hotels including the Rider Hotel, which burned down in 1931. The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (PADOC) is the Pennsylvania state agency that is responsible for the confinement, care and rehabilitation of approximately 37,000 inmates at state correctional facilities funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The agency has its headquarters in Hampden Township, Cumberland County in Greater Harrisburg, near Mechanicsburg. In October 2017, Gov. Tom Wolf signed a "memorandum of understanding" that allows the PADOC and the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole to share like resources and eliminate duplicative efforts. All parole supervision now falls under the jurisdiction of the PADOC; while parole release decisions remain under the jurisdiction of the PA Board of Probation and Parole.
