Starkville High School
Starkville High School (SHS) is a public secondary school in Starkville, Mississippi, United States. It is the only high school in the Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District, serving grades 9–12. It offers more than 140 courses, including over 10 Advanced Placement courses. Its school colors are black and gold, and its mascot is the Yellowjacket, a predatory wasp. For the 2018–2019 academic year the graduation rate was 86.3% and the enrollment was 1,420. The consolidated school district serves all of the county. The previous Starkville School District served Starkville, the Mississippi State University census-designated place, Longview, and some other unincorporated areas. Starkville is a city in, and the county seat of, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, United States. Mississippi State University is a land-grant institution and is located partially in Starkville but primarily in an adjacent unincorporated area designated by the United States Census Bureau as Mississippi State, Mississippi. The population was 25,653 in 2019. Starkville is the most populous city of the Golden Triangle region of Mississippi. The Starkville micropolitan statistical area includes all of Oktibbeha County. Dee Barton
Dewells "Dee" Barton Jr. (September 18, 1937 — December 3, 2001) was an American jazz trombonist, big band drummer, and prolific composer for big band and motion pictures. He is best known for his association with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Life Early years Dee Barton was born in Houston, Mississippi in 1937. The family moved to Starkville, Mississippi in 1941. His father became the band director at Starkville High School. "My dad brought home an old Mellophone, E flat mellophone and at the age of three I figured out the fingerings on it," said Barton. Barton later took up the trombone. He practiced in the school band room for 10 hours a day, and was able to help when his father was ill. Miss USA 2002
Miss USA 2002 was the 51st Miss USA pageant, held at Genesis Convention Center in Gary, Indiana on March 1, 2002. The event was won by Shauntay Hinton of the District of Columbia, who was crowned by outgoing queen Kandace Krueger of Texas. This is the second year in a row and third time since 1995 a Miss Teen USA state delegate did not win or inherit the Miss USA title. This was the last Miss USA show to be aired on CBS. Beginning with the next Miss USA pageant, NBC assumed co-ownership of the pageant along with Donald Trump, and as a result began televising the pageant. Hinton was the first African-American woman to win the pageant since Chelsi Smith held the title in 1995, and was the first titleholder from District of Columbia since 1964. Shauntay Renae Hinton (born February 26, 1979) is an American actress and beauty queen who won the Miss USA 2002. Nate Hughes (born January 18, 1985) is a former American football wide receiver. He was signed by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He played college football at Alcorn State. Hughes was also a member of the Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs, and Jacksonville Jaguars. College career Football Hughes was a four-year starter at Alcorn State, catching 161 passes for 2,415 yards and 19 touchdowns, despite missing most of the 2005 season because of a shoulder injury. He also was a three-time Southwestern Athletic Conference decathlon champion, and a two-time champion in the 400-meter hurdles and the 110-meter hurdles. Helen Young Hayes, CFA, (born July 11, 1962 in Oakland, California), is an investment fund manager best known for her success in running the Janus Worldwide Fund and Janus Overseas Fund. Tyson Gregory Carter (born January 14, 1998) is an American professional basketball player for Unicaja Málaga of the Spanish Liga ACB, on loan from Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg.
