Stan Schmidt
Stan Schmidt was a South African master of Shotokan karate. Along with others, such as Norman Robinson, he was an early practitioner of Shotokan karate in South Africa and his establishment of the South African branch of the Japan Karate Association (JKA) in 1965 after training in Japan, along with his subsequent promotion of the art in South Africa, earned him the appellation of 'The Father of South African Karate'. In 1963, he was one of the first westerners to be invited into the JKA's famous Instructor Class in the Tokyo Honbu dojo and he was later one of four non-Japanese karateka to sit on the JKA's international Shihankai. He was also the first non-Japanese karateka to attain 7th dan from the JKA and also the first to attain 8th dan. Today, he is the highest ranking non-Japanese karate master of that organization. Hiroshi Shirai
is a Japanese master of Shotokan karate. He is the founder of the Istituto Shotokan Italia, a subdivision of FIKTA (the Italian Traditional Karate Association) and of the SCI (Shotokan Cultural Institute, formerly WSI - World Shotokan Institute). Shirai holds the title of ''Shihan'' and is responsible for taking the ''dan'' examinations within SCI and, together with Carlo Fugazza, for those within the FIKTA. Karin Prinsloo (born 1972) is a South African karateka, gold medal winner of the 6th World Games (2001) in the under 60 kg Kumite category and Karate instructor formerly based in Durban, South Africa, now hailing from Perth, Australia. She is listed among the top 100 Karate competitors of all time. The World Games are an international multi-sport event first held in 1981 and organised and governed by the International World Games Association (IWGA) under the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The World Games are for sports that are not contested in the Olympic Games. The 6th World Games were held in 2001 in Akita, Japan. This is a list of some of the larger Shotokan karate organizations and associations in order by year of establishment. International Japan Karate-Do Association lead by Shihan Sadasige Kato. Its headquarters is situated in Tokyo, Japan, though its main activities are based on Europe. Shotokai The name "Shotokai" is used as a synonym for the Shotokan ryu association ''Dai Nihon Karate-do Shotokai''. It is the Shotokan Karate association established by Gichin Funakoshi originally in 1930. Shotokai association is the keeper of master Funakoshi's Karate-do heritage.
