St Margaret's Church, Hopton
St Margaret's Church is the parish church of Hopton-on-Sea in the English county of Norfolk. It is dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch. St Margaret is also the dedication of the former church, which was destroyed by fire in 1865. The ruins of the former church remain standing, and are still consecrated. Both the old and new churches are Grade II* listed. Until 1974, Hopton-on-Sea was called Hopton (although the former railway station had changed its name in 1932); the formal name for the benefice remains Hopton. The church is in the Diocese of Norwich, and is within the deanery of Lothingland and archdeaconry of Norfolk. Old St Margaret's The old church () had a simple Early English nave, and a square west tower. The architecture of the church suggests it was built between 1189 and 1250. Henry Charles Somerset, 6th Duke of Beaufort, KG (22 December 1766 – 23 November 1835), styled Marquess of Worcester until 1803, was a British politician. Background and education Somerset was the son of Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort. He was styled by the courtesy title Marquess of Worcester from his birth until his accession to the dukedom in 1803. He was educated at Westminster School, London and graduated from Trinity College, Oxford, on 28 June 1786 with a Master of Arts. Norman and Beard were a pipe organ manufacturer based in Norwich from 1887 to 1916. History The origins of the company are from a business founded in Diss in 1870 by Ernest William Norman (1851–1927). In 1876 he moved to Norwich where he went into partnership with his brother, Herbert John Norman (1861–1936). In 1887 they went into partnership with George A. Wales Beard, and the company was formed. In 1896 the company opened a second office in London. They worked closely with Robert Hope-Jones and held the patents on many of his developments, including electro-pneumatic action. Paul Quail
Paul Quail (1928 – 31 July 2010) was a British stained-glass artist. He was elected a fellow of the British Society of Master Glass Painters in 1973 and was a member of Christian Arts and the Society of Catholic Artists. Career He was born in Langley, Buckinghamshire and attended Blackfriars school in Laxton, Northamptonshire. After serving in the Royal Tank Regiment during the Second World War he studied art and design at the Chelsea School of Art and went on to Brighton College of Art where he qualified as an art teacher. He then served an apprenticeship at the stained-glass studios of Lowndes & Drury, Francis Spear and Eddie Nuttgens. He taught the art of stained-glass at Flatford Mill and at West Dean College. Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, 1st Baronet, (; 28 August, 183317 June, 1898) was a British painter and designer associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood which included Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Millais, Ford Madox Brown and Holman Hunt. Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (1861–1875) was a furnishings and decorative arts manufacturer and retailer founded by the artist and designer William Morris with friends from the Pre-Raphaelites. With its successor Morris & Co. Turret (architecture)
In architecture, a turret is a small tower that projects vertically from the wall of a building such as a medieval castle. Turrets were used to provide a projecting defensive position allowing covering fire to the adjacent wall in the days of military fortification. As their military use faded, turrets were used for decorative purposes, as in the Scottish baronial style. A turret can have a circular top with crenellations as seen in the picture at right, a pointed roof, or other kind of apex. A buttress is an architectural structure built against or projecting from a wall which serves to support or reinforce the wall. Buttresses are fairly common on more ancient buildings, as a means of providing support to act against the lateral (sideways) forces arising out of inadequately braced roof structures. A lancet window is a tall, narrow window with a pointed arch at its top. It acquired the "lancet" name from its resemblance to a lance. Instances of this architectural element are typical of Gothic church edifices of the earliest period. Lancet windows may occur singly, or paired under a single moulding, or grouped in an odd number with the tallest window at the centre.
