St Austell RFC
St Austell RFC is a Cornish rugby union club that is based in the town of St Austell and was founded in 1963. The club run three senior men's teams as well as ladies side, a colts and multiple junior/mini sides. The club's kit is red and white hoops and the first team currently play in Tribute Western Counties West with home games at Tregorrick Park. History Early history St Austell RFC was formed on 31 July 1963 by Wilf Vernalls and Des Robbins, with home games being played at Cyprus Avenue in Par Moor. There had been a previous rugby club in St Austell called the Hornets who had formed in 1933, but during the 1954–55 season this club relocated to Newquay, becoming known as the Newquay Hornets. Rugby union in Cornwall ( kw, unyans rugbi) is Cornwall's most popular spectator sport with a large following. The followers of the national side are dubbed Trelawny's Army. In 1991 and 1999 Cornwall won the County Championship final played at Twickenham Stadium, beating Yorkshire and Gloucestershire respectively to win the Cup. They had another strong spell in the 2010s, reaching seven of the eight finals contested between 2013 and 2022 (meeting either Cheshire or Lancashire on every occasion), winning four of them. Cornwall/Devon League (known as Tribute Cornwall/Devon League for sponsorship reasons) was an English level eight, rugby union league for clubs principally based in Cornwall and Devon. Following the reorganisation of the English rugby union leagues in 2022, the league was replaced by two level eight leagues based in Cornwall and Devon. The Pirates Amateurs won the last competition in season 2021–22 and were promoted to Counties 1 Western West Format The champions and runner-up were promoted to Western Counties West. Penryn (; kw, Pennrynn, meaning 'promontory') is a civil parish and town in west Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is on the Penryn River about northwest of Falmouth. History Wadebridge played in the Tribute South West 1 West, for four seasons having won promotion from the Tribute Western Counties West by beating Tribute Western Counties North runners-up Thornbury RFC by 25 points to 21 at the end of the 2009–10 season. In what proved to be a very successful season for the Camels, Wadebridge followed up their promotion by winning the Skinners Cornwall Cup final for the second time in three years by beating defending champions St Ives by 26 points to 21.
