St. Paul Cash Spiel
The St. Paul Let's Cure Lupus Cash Spiel is an annual bonspiel, or curling tournament, that takes place at the St. Paul Curling Club in St. Paul, Minnesota. It is part of the World Curling Tour. The bonspiel takes place during the 6th/7th week of the Tour. Bonspiel
A bonspiel is a curling tournament, consisting of several games, often held on a weekend. Until the 20th century most bonspiels were held outdoors, on a frozen freshwater loch. Today almost all bonspiels are held indoors on specially prepared artificial ice. Todd Birr
Todd Birr (born April 20, 1968) is an American curler. He was a bronze medalist at the 2007 World Men's Curling Championship. Career Birr skipped his team to victory at the 2007 United States Curling Men's Championships, beating out teams such as Olympic bronze medalist Pete Fenson and former national champion Jason Larway in the process. He had relative success in prior nationals finishing fourth in 2006 and as a semi-finalist in 2004. His victory qualified his team of Bill Todhunter, Greg Johnson and Kevin Birr to a berth at the 2007 Ford World Men's Curling Championship representing team USA. There, Birr's was the only team to defeat Glenn Howard's Canadian team in the round robin when Howard wrecked on his last rock, and Birr bumped out a Canadian stone to score three giving him a victory. Jeff Currie
Jeff Currie (born c. 1976) is a Canadian curler from Thunder Bay, Ontario. He is a former Canadian Junior champion. He currently curls for the Eveleth, Minnesota-based Joe Polo rink on the World Curling Tour. During his junior career, Currie won just one Northern Ontario provincial junior title, in 1996 defeating Dusty Jakomait in the provincial junior final. Currie made his lone provincial junior title count at the 1996 Canadian Junior Curling Championships representing Northern Ontario. Currie skipped a rink which consisted of Greg Given, Andrew Mikkelsen and Tyler Oinonen. The team finished the round robin of the event in 2nd place, with an 8-4 record. Tyler George
Tyler George (born October 6, 1982) is an American curler from Duluth, Minnesota. He is a three-time U.S. Champion, 2016 World bronze medalist, and 2018 Olympic gold medalist. Since the 2018 Olympics, he has taken a break from playing competitive curling, instead spending time as an ambassador and coach for the sport. Curling career Juniors George competed at the United States Junior National Championships several times but never made it past the semifinals. Pete Fenson
Peter Fenson (born February 29, 1968 in Bemidji, Minnesota) is an American curler. He was the skip of the men's rink that represented the United States at the 2006 Winter Olympics, where they won the bronze medal, the first Olympic medal for the United States in curling. He has won eight national championships, the most recent in Philadelphia in March 2014, and six as skip. Career Fenson took up curling at age 13; his father, Bob Fenson, won the 1979 national championships and is now the coach of Pete's rink. Pete Fenson was a third on the national champion rinks in 1993 and 1994, and his rink, skipped by Scott Baird, made it to the semifinals of the 1993 World Curling Championship and placed fifth in 1994. Trevor Clifford (1927–2019) was an Australian botanist and taxonomist, distinguished for his work on the hybridisation of species and palaeobotany. Early life Harold Trevor Clifford was born in Melbourne, Australia on 18 April 1927. His father owned a furniture shop and later worked as a green grocer in Perth and Melbourne during the Great Depression. After the completion of school, he took employment with the Victorian Department of Education which offered a scholarship to obtain a teaching degree. He was awarded a Dafydd Lewis scholarship and began his study at the University of Melbourne in 1945.
