St. Louis County District Courthouse
The St. Louis County District Courthouse is the seat of government for the northern district of St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States, located in the city of Virginia. The St. Louis County District Court is held in three locations: Duluth, Hibbing and Virginia. The Virginia courthouse was built in Beaux-Arts style in 1910 and expanded with an architecturally sympathetic addition by the firm of Croft & Boerner in 1921. St. Louis County is large—some —and Duluth, the county seat, is at the southern end of the county, far removed from the communities of the Iron Range. Local advocacy succeeded in having a second county court district established in 1904, with cases heard in a small frame building. It was replaced by this present courthouse in 1910. Virginia is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States, on the Mesabi Iron Range. With an economy heavily reliant on large-scale iron ore mining, Virginia is considered the Mesabi Range's commercial center. The population was 8,423 at the 2020 census. Croft & Boerner was an architectural and engineering firm based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. It was a partnership of Francis Boerner (1889–1936) and Ernest Croft (1889–1959). Several of their works are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places for their architecture. Iron Range
The term Iron Range refers collectively or individually to a number of elongated iron-ore mining districts around Lake Superior in the United States and Canada. Much of the ore-bearing region lies alongside the range of granite hills formed by the Giants Range batholith. These cherty iron ore deposits are Precambrian in the Vermilion Range and middle Precambrian in the Mesabi and Cuyuna ranges, all in Minnesota. The Gogebic Range in Wisconsin and the Marquette Iron Range and Menominee Range in Michigan have similar characteristics and are of similar age. Natural ores and concentrates were produced from 1848 until the mid-1950s, when taconites and jaspers were concentrated and pelletized, and started to become the major source of iron production.
