St. John The Baptist Roman Catholic Church (Plattsburgh, New York)
St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church and Rectory is a historic Roman Catholic church and rectory located at 20 Broad Street in Plattsburgh, Clinton County, New York. Both structures were added to the National Register of Historic Places as one record in 1982. Description The imposing masonry church was built in 1874. Cruciform in plan with Gothic Revival pointed arches and buttresses. It features a spired tower surmounted by a stone cross finial. The rectory was built between 1909–1910 and is a three-story, rectangular-in-plan masonry structure that features a half-mansard roof with balcony. Plattsburgh ( moh, Tsi ietsénhtha) is a city in, and the seat of, Clinton County, New York, United States, situated on the north-western shore of Lake Champlain. The population was 19,841 at the 2020 census. The population of the surrounding (and separately incorporated) Town of Plattsburgh was 11,886 as of the 2020 census, making the combined population for all of greater Plattsburgh to be 31,727. Plattsburgh lies just to the northeast of Adirondack Park, immediately outside of the park boundaries. The Colonial Revival architectural style seeks to revive elements of American colonial architecture. The beginnings of the Colonial Revival style are often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which reawakened Americans to the architectural traditions of their colonial past. Fairly small numbers of Colonial Revival homes were built c. 1880–1910, a period when Queen Anne-style architecture was dominant in the United States.
