St. Brigid's Church, Prince Edward Island
St. Brigid's Church is a Roman Catholic church in Foxley River, PEI, Canada. It is part of the Roman Catholic diocese of Charlottetown History Prior to 1870, residents of Lot 11 traveled to St. Anthony parish, Cascumpeque, a journey which involved a ferry crossing and nine miles travel over land, or in winter time, a horse and sleigh ride across the ice. In 1868, under the guidance of their first priest Rev. James Aeneas McDonald (1820- ?), the Catholic settlers of Lot 11 started construction on the church. It was completed in 1873, although by Christmas Eve 1870, construction was far enough advanced that midnight mass was offered on a temporary altar. The name for the church was chosen due to the predominantly Irish pioneer settlement of the area. Foxley River is a Canadian rural community in Prince County, Prince Edward Island. It derives its name from a local river which was named by Samuel Holland in 1765 for Henry Fox (1705–1774), the 1st Baron Holland of Foxley. The river flows northwest into Cascumpec Bay. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlottetown ( la, Dioecesis Carolinapolitana) is a diocese of the Catholic Church in Canada. Lot 11 is a township in Prince County, Prince Edward Island, Canada. It is part of Halifax Parish. Following the Seven Years' War, Lot 11 was awarded in the land lottery of 1767 to Colonel Hunt Walsh, the commanding officer of 28th Regiment of Foot at the capture of Louisbourg and the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. While ownership remained with the heirs of Colonel Walsh, portions of the lot were leased to settlers under sequential administration by land agents James Bardin Palmer, John Large and James Warburton.
