St. Andrew's Society Of Montreal
The Saint Andrew's Society of Montreal is a non-profit organization based in Montreal dedicated to celebrating Scotland, Scottish heritage. It was founded in 1835. It was established with the stated aims of “regulating charity in a systematic manner” and “to advance the cause and welfare of Scotsmen and their descendants”. It provides funding to various groups associated with Scottish culture, promotes activities that reflect Scottish traditions and provides financial assistance to persons in need. The society also offered scholarships to students of Scottish descent. The first president of the Society was Peter McGill, who was also the second mayor of Montreal. In 1849, following the passing of the Rebellion Losses Bill, the Society took the extraordinary step of removing the Governor General of Canada of the time, James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin, Lord Elgin, from its membership; the Governor General had formerly been a patron of the society. Alexander Walker Ogilvie
Alexander Walker Ogilvie (May 7, 1829 – March 31, 1902) was a Canadian politician and businessman. He and his brothers, William and John, are remembered for their pioneering work in the Canadian milling trade with their company, A. W. Ogilvie & Co. of Montreal, and as pioneers and believers in the success of the Canadian West. Their company expanded to become the largest flour milling company in the British Empire. He was born in Côte-Saint-Michel, Lower Canada (now Quebec) which is on the island of Montreal, the son of Alexander Ogilvie and Helen Watson. He attended the Howden and Taggart Academy in Montreal. His father and his uncle, James Goudie, operated a flour mill called Glenora Mills on the Lachine Canal. Alexander went into partnership with his uncle in 1852. William Hew Clark-Kennedy
William Hew Clark-Kennedy, (3 March 1879 – 25 October 1961) was a British-born Canadian soldier and a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Family William Clark-Kennedy was born on 3 March 1879 at Dunskey House, near Portpatrick on the Scottish Rhins of Galloway. William Peterson (academic)
Sir William Peterson, (29 May 1856 – 4 January 1921) was a Scottish academic and the Principal of McGill University from 1895 to 1919. Biography Born in Edinburgh, the fifth son of John Peterson and Grace Mountford Anderson, Peterson graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1875 and Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 1879. In 1882, he became the first principal of the recently established University College, Dundee, a position he would hold until 1895. Peterson, despite being aged only 26, won this position ahead of three other candidates including John Edward Aloysious Stegall, who would go on to serve as Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at University College, Dundee. Hugh Paton
Hugh Paton (October 5, 1852 – January 28, 1941) was a Scottish business owner in Montreal. Biography The son of William Paton and Mary Shedden, he was born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, was educated in Paisley and came to Canada in 1871. He was first employed as private secretary for his uncle John Shedden, a railway contractor based in Toronto. His uncle was killed in a railway accident in 1873 and Paton became secretary-treasurer for The Shedden Forwarding Company, which handled storage, collection and cartage services for the Grand Trunk Railway; also at this time, he moved to Montreal. Donald Macmaster
Sir Donald Macmaster, 1st Baronet, (3 September 1846 – 3 March 1922) was a Canadian lawyer and a politician in both Canada and the United Kingdom. Macmaster was born into a family of Scottish descent in Williamstown, Glengarry County, Canada West (now in eastern Ontario). During the Fenian Raids in 1866 he served as a lieutenant in the Williamstown Volunteer Infantry. He studied law at McGill University, was called to the Quebec bar in 1871, and set up practice in Montreal. Macmaster served as Crown Prosecutor for many cases. He was called to the Ontario bar and appointed Queen's Counsel in 1882. He represented Glengarry in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1879 to 1882 and in the House of Commons of Canada as a Conservative member from 1883 to 1887, when he lost his seat. Robert Mackay (February 24, 1840 – December 25, 1916) was a Canadian businessman and statesman. Life and career Mackay was born in Caithness, Scotland. Duncan McIntyre (businessman)
Duncan McIntyre (23 December 1834 – 13 June 1894) was a Scots-Quebecer businessman from Callander noted for his participation in the Canadian Pacific Railway syndicate of 1880 and as a founder of the Bell Telephone Company of Canada. The Canada Central Railway was owned by McIntyre who amalgamated it with the CPR and became one of the handful of officers of the newly formed CPR. The CCR started in Brockville and extended to Pembroke. It then followed a westward route along the Ottawa River passing through places like Cobden, Deux Rivieres and eventually to Mattawa at the confluence of the Mattawa and Ottawa Rivers. It then proceeded cross-country towards its final destination, Callander. McIntyre and his contractor James Worthington led the CCR expansion. Donald Alexander Smith, 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal (6 August 182021 January 1914), known as Sir Donald A. Hugh McLennan (businessman)
Hugh McLennan (June 26, 1825 – November 22, 1899) was a Canadian merchant of Scottish descent who was primarily based in Montreal. The son of John McLennan, who came to Canada from Scotland in 1802, he was born in Lancaster, Upper Canada, and was educated in Glengarry County. In 1842, he moved to Montreal to work in a hardware business there. He later worked as a purser on steamships that travelled between Montreal and Kingston. In 1850, he was promoted to freight agent, at first based in Kingston and later in Montreal. In 1853, with his brother, he founded a grain and shipping company, later known as the Montreal Transportation Company with McLennan as president.
