Sreekanteswaram is a place in Thiruvananthapuram city (Trivandrum), India. The place is known for the Siva temple, from which the name was derived. Pazhaya Sreekanteswaram Temple
Pazhaya Sreekanteswaram Temple or Old Sreekanteswaram Temple, located at Puthenchantha in Thiruvananthapuram, is one of the ancient Shiva temples in Kerala. According to the renowned historian Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai, this temple existed even in the 9th century AD. This temple is the original abode of the Lord of new Sreekanteswaram Mahadeva Temple. The new temple is situated just outside the "North Fort" in Thiruvananthapuram. As noted by Dr. M. G. Sasibhooshan, the old temple was on the route taken by the King of Travancore and his retinue in connection with the ''Pallivetta'' of the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Deities Lord Siva and Lord Krishna (Vishnu) are the principal deities in Old Sreekanteswaram. The linga of Sreekanteswara (Siva) is believed to have been installed by Sree Parashurama. Sreekanteswaram Padmanabha Pillai
Sreekanteswaram G. Padmanabha Pillai (1865–1946), popularly known as ''Sreekanteswaram'', was a lexicographer and scholar best known for his Malayalam dictionary ''Sabdatharavali''. Life Padmanabha Pillai was born on 1865Kathakali, the Art of the Non-worldly, p.27 in Sreekanteswaram, Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum). He studied English, Tamil and Sanskrit and wrote ''Duryodhanavadham'' and ''Dharmaguptavadham'' at a young age. He later worked as a lawyer. He started his work on ''Sabdatharavali'' at the age of 32. The first part of the book came out in 1918. The dictionary, which runs into more than 1600 pages, took twenty years to complete. His son P. Damodara Pillai later compiled a concise version. Padmanabha Pillai also prepared a pocket dictionary in 1906. Padmanabha Pillai wrote around sixty books in his lifetime. Sreekanteswaram Mahadeva Temple
Sreekanteswaram Mahadeva Temple is an ancient Shiva temple situated in Thiruvananthapuram, in the Indian state of Kerala. Pazhaya Sreekanteswaram Temple is the original abode of the Lord. Deities and sub-deities Lord Shiva is the temple's Presiding Deity. Although his consort Sree Parvati has no idol, she is ever-present in the Sanctum. A Sanctum for Lord Sastha is within the Chuttambalam. Lord Ganapati, the serpent gods and Lord Krishna dwell outside the Chuttambalam. Many devotees argue that the idol worshipped as Bhootathan is actually a Yakshi. Lord Hanuman and Lord Murugan, both carved on pillars near the flagmast, receive worship. All the deities face east.
