Abuja
Abuja () is the capital and eighth most populous city of Nigeria. Situated at the centre of the country within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), it is a planned city built mainly in the 1980s based on a master plan by International Planning Associates (IPA), a consortium of three American planning and architecture firms made up of Wallace, Roberts, McHarg & Todd (WRMT – a group of architects) as the lead, Archisystems International (a subsidiary of the Howard Hughes Corporation), and Planning Research Corporation. Squash At The 2023 African Games
The 13th African Games is expected to be held in three cities in Ghana in 2024 on dates yet to be confirmed. This will be the second time in history that the games will be decentralized in a process that started in the previous edition held in Morocco. The three cities chosen for these functions are Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast. Bids * Accra, Ghana (elected) * Abuja, Nigeria * Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso Ghana won the rights to host the event in October 2018. In November 2021, Ghana signed an agreement with the African Union to host the event. Venues Plans to build a new stadium for the event were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The new Borteyman Sports Complex located in Borteyman, Accra is intended to be used for indoor sports. Branding The mascot, the logo and the website of the event were unveiled in December 2021. Squash is a racket-and- ball sport played by two or four players in a four-walled court with a small, hollow, rubber ball. The players alternate in striking the ball with their rackets onto the playable surfaces of the four walls of the court. The objective of the game is to hit the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The African Games, formally known as the All-Africa Games or the Pan African Games, are a continental multi-sport event held every four years, organized by the African Union (AU) with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and the Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC). All of the competing nations are from the African continent. The first Games were held in 1965 in Brazzaville, Congo. The International Olympic Committee granted official recognition as a continental multi-sport event, along with the Asian Games and Pan American Games. Since 1999, the Games have also included athletes with a disability. The Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA) was the organisation body for the game. Karim Darwish ( ar, كريم درويش; born 29 August 1981) is an Egyptian squash player. Career overview As a junior player, he won the World Junior Championship title in 2000, and the British Junior Open title in 1999. Earlier in 2008, Darwish finished runner-up at the World Open, losing in the final to fellow Egyptian player Ramy Ashour (11–5, 8–11, 4–11, 5–11). Darwish displaced Amr Shabana to claim the world number 1 position after winning the prestigious 2008 Saudi International and 3 major titles (including the Qatar Classic) in 2008. Omneya Abdel Kawy ( ar, أمنية عبد القوي; born 15 August 1985, in Cairo) is a former professional squash player from Egypt. Career Omneya crowned a successful junior career in 2003 in her home city of Cairo when she became the first Egyptian woman to win a world junior title having won the 2003 World Junior Championship; she had previously been the runner up to Nicol David in 1999 and 2001. Such was already competing on the WISPA Tour during her mid teens. She reached number seven in the world rankings early in 2005 and achieved match ball against world number one Rachael Grinham in the final of the Hurghada International in her home country, though she eventually lost the match.
