Springburn (ward)
Springburn/Robroyston (Ward 17) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. Created as Springburn, in 2007 and in 2012 it returned three council members, using the single transferable vote system. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the boundaries were changed, the ward increased in size and population (the latter by 20%), was renamed ''Springburn/Robroyston'' and returned four members. Boundaries Located in the north of Glasgow, the original core of the ward centred around the district of Springburn (including the neighbourhoods of Stobhill, Old Balornock, Petershill and Balgrayhill), as well as part of Cowlairs (streets to the east of the Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk Line railway tracks which form the ward's western boundary), and part of Colston (streets to the east of Springburn Road and south of Colston Road - north of this belongs to the adjoining town of Bishopbriggs in East Dunbartonshire which forms the northern boundary). Springburn
Springburn ( gd, Allt an Fhuairainn) is an inner-city district in the north of the Scottish city of Glasgow, made up of generally working-class households. Springburn developed from a rural hamlet at the beginning of the 19th century. Its industrial expansion began with the establishment of a chemical works by Charles Tennant on the newly opened Monkland Canal at nearby St. Rollox in 1799, which later became part of the United Alkali Company. Later in the 19th century, the construction of railway lines through the area led to the establishment of railway works and the village became a parish in its own right. The Garnkirk and Glasgow Railway first opened in 1831 to supply the St. Rollox Chemical Works and the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway was opened in 1842. Later, the City Union Line was extended to Springburn in 1871, and the Hamiltonhill Branch Line opened in 1894. East Dunbartonshire
East Dunbartonshire ( sco, Aest Dunbartanshire; gd, Siorrachd Dhùn Bhreatainn an Ear) is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders the north of Glasgow and contains many of the affluent areas to the north of the city, including Bearsden, Milngavie, Milton Of Campsie, Balmore and Torrance, as well as many of the city's commuter towns and villages. East Dunbartonshire also shares borders with North Lanarkshire, Stirling and West Dunbartonshire. Balornock
Balornock (, gd, Both Lobharnaig) is a district in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. Situated outside the city centre, north of the River Clyde, it forms part of the larger area of Springburn. Balornock shared the Red Road complex of multi-storey flats with the neighbouring district of Barmulloch; the 21 Birnie Court building (single yellow block) was in Barmulloch. The buildings were formally condemned in July 2008 after a long period of decline, with their phased demolition taking place in three stages between 2010 and 2015. Barmulloch ( gd, Barr a' Mhullaich) is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated north of the River Clyde. Formerly rural, it was developed as a post war overspill housing area, largely featuring Prefabricated housing. Robroyston
Robroyston ( gd, Baile Raibeart Ruadh) is a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, located around 3 miles (5 km) north-east of the city centre. To the north, it directly adjoins Auchinairn (part of Bishopbriggs) in the neighbouring East Dunbartonshire local authority area. The Glasgow neighbourhoods of Balornock and Barmulloch lie to the west, but these are largely separated from Robroyston by a nature reserve. Land to the east towards North Lanarkshire is open countryside, which has made the area a popular location for housing developments. Boundaries Located in the far north-east of Glasgow, the core of the ward since 2007 includes neighbourhoods between the M8 motorway and the city boundary with North Lanarkshire: Easterhouse, Provanhall, Garthamlock, Craigend, Ruchazie, Hogganfield, Provanmill and Blackhill as well as the village of Gartloch, all bordered by open ground, much of which is within the Seven Lochs Wetland Park. Blochairn
Blochairn (, gd, Baile a' Chàirn, lit, Town of the Cairn) is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow, situated north of the River Clyde. The district lies on either side of the main Blochairn Road. In 1969 the Blochairn Fruit Market opened there, next to a junction on the M8. The market occupies and has 74 fruit and vegetable stalls and six fish stalls; it also handles flowers. It operates 24 hours a day and handles over two million tons of produce per year; it is used by caterers and food processors throughout central and western Scotland and also in Northern Ireland and Northern England. It has been Scotland's largest outdoor market since the closure of Ingliston Market in Edinburgh. The Fruit Market was previously located near Glasgow Cross. Dennistoun (Ward 22) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council; used since the 2017 local election, it is one of two created from the Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland's 5th Review. The ward returns three council members. Boundaries Located east of Glasgow city centre, the ward is centred around Dennistoun, although does not include all of the district - the ''Reidvale'' streets to the south of Duke Street are within the Calton ward. Sighthill, Glasgow
Sighthill is a neighbourhood in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated north of the River Clyde and is part of the wider Springburn district in the north of the city. It is bordered to the north by Cowlairs, to the east by the Springburn Bypass road and the Royston neighbourhood, to the west by the Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk Line (running into Queen Street Station) and to the south by the Townhead interchange of the M8 Motorway. The district is primarily residential and from the mid-1960s consisted of a housing estate split into two sub-areas – Pinkston to the south and Fountainwell to the north – each with five 20-storey 'slab' tower blocks, plus seven 5-storey maisonette blocks and five rows of tenements in between. Germiston, Glasgow
Germiston is a neighbourhood in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, north of the River Clyde. History It formerly centred around Germiston House, a mansion built in 1690 by Robert Dinwiddie, a tobacco lord in Virginia and father of Robert Dinwiddie, governor of Virginia, and Lawrence Dinwiddie, Lord Provost of Glasgow, both of whom were born there. Lawrence Dinwiddie inherited the house and raised his 21 children there. In 1864, the house was acquired by Rev Dr George Stewart Burns, minister of Glasgow Cathedral. The setting of the house was ruined by a railway line being placed beside it and it was used as housing for labourers from around 1890.
