NCAA
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates student athletics among about 1,100 schools in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. It also organizes the athletic programs of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada and helps over 500,000 college student athletes who compete annually in college sports. The organization is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Until 1957, the NCAA was a single division for all schools. Kenai River Brown Bears
The Kenai River Brown Bears are a Tier II junior ice hockey team in the North American Hockey League based in Soldotna, Alaska. The team joined the North American Hockey League (NAHL) as an expansion team for the 2007–08 season, and since then has upgraded and added team-specific facilities to the 2,000 plus capacity Soldotna Sports Center it calls home. On February 28, 2017, during a major slump in the Alaskan economy, years of team futility and increased travel costs, the Brown Bears announced it would cease operations at the end of the 2016–17 season. However, after a fan fundraising effort, the Brown Bears applied to the NAHL for approval to reactivate in April 2017 and was approved. Due to the travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Brown Bears temporarily relocated home games to Breezy Point, Minnesota, for most of the 2020–21 season until mid-April 2021. Denali Destroyer Dolls
The Denali Destroyer Dolls (DDD) is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Wasilla, Alaska. Founded in 2010, the league consists of a single team, which competes against teams from other leagues. The league was founded in July 2010 and played its first season in 2012/13, winning a majority of its eight bouts. It works closely with a junior roller derby league, the Valley Vixens, and has been involved in a variety of local events, including a bra-related art exhibition. MatSu United FC
MatSu United FC is a semi-professional soccer club based in Palmer, Alaska. The club began playing in the Last Frontier Division of the United Premier Soccer League in 2019. History The club was founded as Alaska City FC in 2011. On June 5, 2018 it was announced the team would join the semi-professional UPSL, becoming the first Alaskan soccer club to play at the fifth-tier of soccer or above. The team made its league debut on June 7, 2019 in a scoreless draw against Arctic Rush. Following the club's debut UPSL season, Alaska City FC rebranded as MatSu United FC on May 23, 2020. Sonot Kkaazoot
The Sonot Kkaazoot is the premier long-distance cross-country ski race in Fairbanks, Alaska. The race includes two events, a 50 km (31 mile) and 20 km (12.5 mile) course. Both events begin and end on the Chena River in downtown Fairbanks. Both events are freestyle, mass start and are raced simultaneously. Origins The race was founded in 1988 by noted Fairbanks skier Bob Baker. The name of the race is based on a Koyukon word which translates roughly as 'sliding around in early spring' and was used by Native people to describe the motion of cross-country skiers. Fairbanks is a home rule city and the borough seat of the Fairbanks North Star Borough in the U.S. state of Alaska. Fairbanks Rollergirls
Fairbanks Rollergirls (FBXRG) is a women's flat track roller derby league, located in Fairbanks, Alaska. Founded in 2008, FBXRG is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). History and organization Founded in 2008 by local entrepreneur Michelle Maynor (also known as "Bad Lady") the early members were a handful of motivated, strong-willed women with a passion for roller derby. Maynor was quickly elected president of the organization and held the position until her term ended in July 2011. In April 2010 FBXRG was accepted as an Apprentice Member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). In June 2011 the Fairbanks Rollergirls were accepted as full WFTDA members, as a part of the West region. Fairbanks Rollergirls is a skater-owned, skater-operated organization. Fairbanks Ice Dogs
The Fairbanks Ice Dogs are a Tier II junior ice hockey team in the North American Hockey League's Midwest Division. The Ice Dogs play home games at the 2,200-seat Big Dipper Ice Arena in Fairbanks, Alaska. History Originally started in 1997 in the Tier III Junior B Western States Hockey League (WSHL) as a hockey program to replace the Alaska Gold Kings and give Alaskan players a chance to play after they finished high school and/or midgets. The Ice Dogs won the Northern Division its inaugural season, but lost to the Southern champs the following year in exhibition games. In 1998–99 season, they again won the Northern Division but lost to the Southern Division champions, the Ventura Mariners. Alaska Nanooks Men's Ice Hockey
The Alaska Nanooks men's ice hockey team is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college ice hockey program that represents the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Nanooks are an Independent. They play at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. History Early history (1925–1973) Varsity hockey at Alaska-Fairbanks began in 1925. The team played four games during the inaugural 1925–26 season and finished the season with a 3–1–0 record despite having no coach. The program returned in 1932 and for three additional seasons the team operated without a coach as an independent collegiate program. Alfred Bastress joined the Nanooks in 1937 and became the program's first head coach. Bastress led the Nanooks for four seasons. The Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks are a collegiate summer baseball team which was founded in 1960 as an independent barnstorming team. The Goldpanners were charter members of the Alaska Baseball League at the league's inception in 1974. The Goldpanners play their home games at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks, Alaska, United States. They also host the annual Midnight Sun Game at their home venue. Like other amateur collegiate summer baseball teams, the Goldpanners operate in a similar manner to professional minor league organizations: playing a nightly schedule, using wooden bats, and with lengthy road trips facing advanced competition. Carlson Center
The Carlson Center is a 4,595-seat multi-purpose arena in Fairbanks, Alaska, United States. It is the third largest arena in Alaska by seating capacity after the Sullivan Arena and Alaska Airlines Center, both of which are in Anchorage. It is home to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks ice hockey team of the WCHA and also serves as the site for the university's commencement exercises as well as graduation ceremonies for Lathrop, West Valley, and North Pole High Schools.
