Sport In Asturias
Sport in Asturias has always been dominated by football. Other popular sport activities include basketball, cycling, handball, volleyball, roller hockey, and rugby union. Asturias has also hosted a number of international events such as group stage games during the 1982 FIFA World Cup, series of the Davis Cup World Group, international roller hockey competitions, several cycling states of La Vuelta and several matches of the Spain national football team. Asturias is also famous for several traditional sports, being the bowling the most important one. Football Association football is the most popular sport in Asturias. Sporting Gijón and Oviedo are the two most prolific teams in the region as they played more than 40 seasons in La Liga. When both teams meet, they play the Asturian derby. Sporting De Gijón
Real Sporting de Gijón, S.A.D. (), commonly known as Real Sporting, Sporting Gijón, or simply Sporting (although in an international context this can lead to confusion with Sporting Clube de Portugal) is a Spanish football club from Gijón, Principality of Asturias. Founded on 1 July 1905, it plays in La Liga Santander. Known as ''Los Rojiblancos'' because of their red and white striped jerseys, their home ground is El Molinón stadium, the oldest professional football ground in Spain, in use since at least 1908. Spanish Stage Of The UEFA Regions' Cup
The Spanish stage of the UEFA Region's Cup is a biennial Spanish football tournament for amateur teams which represent the Spanish Autonomous Communities. Its winner qualifies for the next UEFA Regions' Cup, played the following year. History The tournament was created in 1999, after the 1999 UEFA Regions' Cup where there was no qualifying tournament and Madrid represented Spain in the international contest (they eventually finished as runners-up). Asturias Autonomous Football Team
The Asturias autonomous football team is the regional football team for Asturias. They are not affiliated with FIFA or UEFA, because it is represented internationally by the Spain national football team. The team only plays friendlies. History Cantabric Federation The Regional Cantabric Federation of Football Clubs was founded on 9 December 1915 with the aim to represent all the clubs in the Province of Oviedo. On 22 November 1916, the Spanish Football Federation allowed the clubs of Cantabria to leave the Northern Regional Championship and join the newly created Cantabrian Regional Federation, along with clubs from Oviedo, soon to be renamed Asturias. Sporting De Gijón (women)
Real Sporting de Gijón Femenino is the women's Association football, football team of Asturias, Asturian football club Sporting de Gijón. History Founded in 1995, the club was renamed as Club Deportivo Escuela de Fútbol de Mareo Femenino in 1999 as part of an agreement with Gijón's town hall, the club decided to rename the team again as Real Sporting de Gijón Femenino in 2016, and to declare it as the official women's section of the club. Gijón Fútbol Femenino is a Spanish women's football club from Gijón established in 2000. As part of an agreement, the club acts ''de facto'' as UC Ceares's women's football section. History Gijón Fútbol Femenino was founded in 2000 by a group of sixteen women who disagreed with the work of their respective clubs in women's football. In its first season the club played in Regional league of Asturias and promoted to Segunda División by winning all its games played. After topping its group of Segunda División for three consecutive seasons, Gijón FF promoted to the Superliga in 2005, after beating CD Nuestra Señora de Belén and UE L'Estartit in the promotion play-offs. The Primera División de la Liga de Fútbol Femenino, currently known as Liga F (finetwork Liga F for sponsorship reasons), is the highest level of league competition for women's football in Spain. Real Oviedo Femenino, officially named as Oviedo Moderno Club de Fútbol, is a Spanish women's football club based in Oviedo, Asturias. It acts as the women's section of Real Oviedo. History Founded in 1980 as México-La Corredoria CF to play a friendly match in the local midsummer celebration, the team was officially registered two years later as Meseico-La Corredoria CF. Caudal Deportivo is a Spanish football team based in Mieres, in the autonomous community of Asturias.
