Byrd Spilman Dewey
Byrd "Birdie" Spilman Dewey (née Julia Bird Spilman; February 16, 1856 – April 1, 1942) was an American author, land investor, and co-developer of the Town of Boynton. She lived in Florida from 1881 until her death in 1942. Her best known work, ''Bruno'', told the Dewey's story of early pioneering days in central Florida. The book remained in print for over twenty years, classified as juvenile literature – today it better fits the classification of young adult literature. Dewey was an important figure in pioneer South Florida history, adding philanthropy, and environmental conservation to her notable endeavors with her work in the Florida Audubon Society. In 2013 and 2017, she was a finalist for the Florida Women's Hall of Fame. Harry Spilman
William Harry Spilman (born July 18, 1954) is a retired Major League Baseball first baseman for the Cincinnati Reds (1978–81), Houston Astros (1981–85, 1988–89), Detroit Tigers (1986), and San Francisco Giants (1986–88). He was also known for his skill as a pinch hitter. He currently coaches in the Kansas City Royals feeder system, as a scout. He previously worked for the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros. Playing career No one drafted Spilman in the 1974 Major League Baseball Draft, and he attended several tryouts with teams before Bill Jameson signed him to a contract with the Cincinnati Reds. In 1977 with the Trois-Rivières Aigles, he won the Eastern League batting title with a .373 average, accruing 184 hits in only 133 games. His average hovered over .400 most of the season and was the highest for a Class AA team in 15 years. By 1978, he was considered one of the Reds' top-hitting prospects. Spilman is an unincorporated community on the Ohio River in Mason County, West Virginia, United States. The village is located along Spilman Lane, Mason County Route 62/24, parallel to West Virginia Route 62 in Waggener District, about three quarters of a mile southeast of West Columbia.United States Geological Survey Topographical Survey Map, West Virginia-Ohio, Point Pleasant Quadrangle (ed.
