Władysław Szpilman
Władysław Szpilman (; 5 December 1911 – 6 July 2000) was a Polish pianist and classical composer of Jewish descent. Szpilman is widely known as the central figure in the 2002 Roman Polanski film '' The Pianist'', which was based on Szpilman's autobiographical account of how he survived the German occupation of Warsaw and the Holocaust. Szpilman studied piano at music academies in Berlin and Warsaw. He became a popular performer on Polish radio and in concert. Confined within the Warsaw ghetto after the German invasion of Poland, Szpilman spent two years in hiding. Towards the end of his concealment, he was helped by Wilm Hosenfeld, a German officer who detested Nazi policies. After World War II, Szpilman resumed his career on Polish radio. Szpilman was also a prolific composer; his output included hundreds of songs and many orchestral pieces. Szpilman Award
The Szpilman Award is an annual art prize. It is awarded to works that exist only for a moment or a short period of time. The purpose of the award is to promote such works whose forms consist of ephemeral situations. It was first presented in 2003 and is still the only award for ephemeral works worldwide. The prize is open for the public. Background The ''Szpilman Award'' is initiated, financed and organized by German-based art group ''Szpilman''. It was founded in 2003. Initially only people from Germany could apply. Regulations were changed in 2004 and opened the call for Europe. The public interest in the prize raised. In 2006 ''Szpilman'' abolished any restrictions: everyone from all over the world can apply now for the ''Szpilman Award''. The winner is chosen by a panel of up to 10 independent judges including the winner of the previous year. Andrzej Szpilman
Andrzej Szpilman (born March 28, 1956, Warsaw, Poland) is a Polish dentist, composer, music producer, publisher, and son of the pianist and composer Władysław Szpilman. Biography Szpilman started his music education in 1962 under Prof. S. Kawalla (violin) and later from 1965 until 1974 in the 4th State School of Music in Warsaw (class of Prof. Nasalska violin and later viola). In 1976, he started to record for Polish Radio as a composer and music producer. He has worked with Polish singers Irena Santor, Hanna Banaszak, Grażyna Świtała, Bogusław Mec, accompanied by the Warsaw Radio Orchestra and Poznań Radio Orchestra. In 1980-81, as a music director, Szpilman produced several shows for TV-Poland. From 1982-83 he became the producer of the first record by the 1980s Polish group, " Oddział Zamknięty" (Close Department), which sold about 450.000 records in 1983 and received "Gold Record 83" from the Polish Recording Company.
