Spera District
Spera District is situated in the most southwestern part of Khost Province, Afghanistan. It borders with Paktia Province to the south and west, Shamal District to the north. The district is within the heartland of the Zadran tribe of Pashtuns. To the east it borders Nadir Shah Kot and Tani districts as well as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan. The population of Spera District is around 21,500 people. The district center is the village of Spera, situated in the central part of the district. History On 16 April 2022, Pakistani airstrikes targeted several villages in Spera District, including Afghan-Dubai, Pasa Mela, Mir Sapar, Mandata, and Kanai, and struck refugee camps belonging to internally displaced persons from Waziristan, killing at least 41 people, mainly women and children, and wounding 22 others. Khost Districts
Khōst ( ps, خوست) is the capital of Khost Province in Afghanistan. It is the largest city in the southeastern part of the country, and also the largest in the region of Loya Paktia. To the south and east of Khost lie Waziristan and Kurram in Pakistan. Khost is the home of Shaikh Zayed University. Khost Airport serves the city as well as the larger region surrounding the city. Spera (Khost Province)
Spera (also spelt Sperah and Speyrah) is a village and the district center of Spera District, Khost Province, Afghanistan. It is located on at 1,790 m altitude. The town is located within the heartland of the Zadran tribe of Pashtuns. During the US occupation of Afghanistan, Spera sat along a highly used smuggling route from Pakistan into Afghanistan. The area was known to harbor many ex members of both the Taliban and the Al Qaeda. Spera is the location where United States Army Ranger Pat Tillman was fatally shot and killed by friendly fire in 2004. Barmal District
Barmal District ( ps, برمل ولسوالۍ, prs, ولسوالی برمل) is a district of Paktika Province, Afghanistan. It shares a border with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, Pakistan. Gayan District
Gayan District ( ps, ګيان ولسوالۍ, prs, ولسوالی گیان) is a district of Paktika Province, Afghanistan. The estimated population in 2019 was 46,977 people. The district is within the heartland of the Zadran tribe of Pashtuns. History Gayan was one of the districts most affected by the magnitude 6.0 earthquake on 22 June 2022. Approximately 1,800 homes, or 70 percent of the district's homes, were destroyed, and 238 people were killed, with 393 others injured. Many houses constructed primarily of mud and wood were razed to the ground. Heavy rain and the earthquake contributed to landslides that destroyed entire hamlets. Earthquake-resistant Structures
Earthquake-resistant or aseismic structures are designed to protect buildings to some or greater extent from earthquakes. A deep earthquake measuring magnitude () 6.2 struck southeastern Afghanistan on 22 June 2022 at 01:24:36 AFT (on 21 June 2022 at 20:54:36 UTC). It affected the provinces of Paktika and Khost, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It was felt over away by at least 119 million people, including in Pakistan's Punjab and in parts of India and Iran. Waziristan
Waziristan (Pashto and ur, , "land of the Wazir") is a mountainous region covering the former FATA agencies of North Waziristan and South Waziristan which are now districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. 2022 Pakistani Airstrikes In Afghanistan
On 16 April 2022, the Pakistani military conducted predawn airstrikes on multiple targets in Afghanistan's Khost and Kunar provinces. Afghan officials said the attacks killed at least 47 civilians and injured 23 others, mostly women and children. Most of the people killed had been displaced from North Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, but the casualties in Kunar Province also included family members of a militant, according to locals.
