Spectacle (band)
Spectacle, originally The Cherry Smash, was an alternative indie pop rock band from California during the 1990s fronted by Blake Miller (later of Moving Units). Their sound was characterized as "sunny, melodic, jangling folk-rock." Other Spectacle members included Alex Crain, Brad Laner (formerly of Medicine), and Brent Rademaker (later of Further and Beachwood Sparks). The band was formed as a trio called The Cherry Smash, which released a 7-inch titled ''West Coast Rip Off'', and made an appearance on the compilation album ''Pure Spun Sugar'' (both on Candy Floss Records). After this the band changed their name to Spectacle and released one album, ''Glow in the Dark Soul'', on June 23, 1998. Spectacle briefly toured with The Brian Jonestown Massacre as an opening act. Although their debut album received positive reviews, it was not commercially successful. Indie Pop
Indie pop (also typeset as indie-pop or indiepop) is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. It originated from British post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated a thriving fanzine, Independent record label, label, and club and gig circuit. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free. In later years, the definition of ''indie pop'' has bifurcated to also mean bands from unrelated DIY scenes/movements with pop leanings. Subgenres include chamber pop and twee pop. Moving Units
Moving Units is an American dance-punk band from Los Angeles, California. History The band was formed in 2001 by Blake Miller (formerly of Spectacle) Johan Boegli and Chris Hathwell after Miller invited Boegli and Hathwell to jam songs from an early demo he self-produced. They released their debut EP, '' Moving Units'', on Three One G in early 2002. Their touring experience includes opening slots for Hot Hot Heat, Pixies, Blur and Nine Inch Nails. Their debut full-length album, '' Dangerous Dreams'', was released on October 12, 2004, by Palm Pictures. Moving Units released their second studio album, '' Hexes for Exes'' in 2007 on Metropolis Records. The first single, "Pink Thoughts", was released through the band's MySpace page. Brad Laner
Brad Laner (born November 6, 1966 in Los Angeles, California) is an American musician and record producer best known for his work with the shoegaze band Medicine, which he founded and led. Prior to Medicine, he was involved in avant-improv bands such as Debt of Nature (at the age of 15), Steaming Coils (at the age of 18)—which also featured members of Los Angeles Free Music Society—and most notably the experimental tribal post-punk outfit Savage Republic, which, according to Pitchfork Media, foreshadowed many ideas later explored in the post-rock genre.Pitchfork Media, Joe Tangari (2010, 16 August)"Brad Laner: Natural Selections album review".Retrieved 09 September 2012. Medicine (band)
Medicine are an American noise pop band formed in Los Angeles in 1990 by guitarist/keyboardist Brad Laner. They are perhaps best known for their cameo appearance in the 1994 film ''The Crow'', in which they performed "Time Baby II", although the soundtrack album included a different version titled "Time Baby III" (featuring guest vocals from the Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser). History Medicine was formed by ex-Savage Republic drummer Brad Laner, based on some 4-track recordings Laner was working on in 1990. Further (band)
Further was an American indie rock band from Los Angeles, California, United States, that evolved from an earlier band, Shadowland. They released several albums during the 1990s. History Further evolved from Shadowland, a sixties-influenced band led by brothers Brent and Darren Rademaker, that released two albums for Geffen Records in 1989 and 1990 (''Shadowland'' and ''The Beauty of Escaping'' respectively). Unlike Shadowland, Further were very much an indie rock band, gaining comparisons with the likes of Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth (Lee Ranaldo even guesting on their debut album). Their second album, '' Sometimes Chimes'', contained 25 tracks, and drew comparisons to Beck, Unrest, Pavement and Sebadoh. Beachwood Sparks
Beachwood Sparks are an American alternative country band from Los Angeles. An article in ''The Daily Telegraph'' on America's underground psychedelic pop scene described Beachwood Sparks as "country through a kaleidoscope". Biography The band was formed by bassist Brent Rademaker and guitarist Christopher Gunst who met in the 1990s when both were members of Los Angeles indie-rock group Further. Guitarist Dave Scher and drummer Jimi Hey (who played with Gunst in Strictly Ballroom) were recruited before the band's first show in June 1997. Hey suggested the band's name by combining Sparks Street, where Brent Rademaker lived in Burbank, with Beachwood Street, which runs parallel and adjacent to Sparks. Hey left after a few shows and was replaced by Tom Sanford. The Brian Jonestown Massacre
The Brian Jonestown Massacre is an American musical project and band led and started by Anton Newcombe. It was formed in San Francisco in 1990. The group was the subject of the 2004 documentary film called '' Dig!'', and have gained media notoriety for their tumultuous working relationships as well as the erratic behavior of Newcombe. The collective has released 18 albums, five compilation albums, five live albums, 13 EPs, 18 singles as well as two various-artist compilation albums to date. The bandname is a ''portmanteau'' of deceased Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones and the 1978 Jonestown Massacre.
