The MTV Europe Music Awards (originally named MTV European Music Awards, commonly abbreviated as MTV EMA) are awards presented by Paramount International Networks to honour artists and music in pop culture. It was originally conceived as an alternative to the MTV Video Music Awards, which are hosted annually in the United States. The Europe Music Awards are held every year in a different country; it has been hosted mostly in the United Kingdom. The annual presentation ceremony features performances by prominent artists, and the presentation of those awards that have a more popular interest. 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards
The 2014 MTV EMAs (also known as the MTV Europe Music Awards) were held at The SSE Hydro, Glasgow, Scotland on 9 November 2014. This was the first time since 2003 when the awards were held in Scotland and the fifth time the United Kingdom has hosted the MTV EMA since the show was hosted in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The event showcases the world's hottest musical acts in a different city each year. The event was hosted by Nicki Minaj. Ariana Grande opened the show with " Problem" and " Break Free". An additional performance from Alicia Keys was featured at the O2 Academy Glasgow. Ozzy Osbourne received the award for Global Icon from Slash. Slash closed the show performing "Crazy Train" featuring The Conspirators and with Myles Kennedy and Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro on vocals. 2019 MTV Europe Music Awards
The 2019 MTV EMAs (also known as the MTV Europe Music Awards) was held at the FIBES Conference and Exhibition Centre in Seville, Spain, on 3 November 2019. The ceremony's host was Becky G. This was the fourth year, as well as the second consecutive year, that Spain hosted the ceremony. It was also the first time a country hosted back-to-back editions. Ariana Grande was nominated for seven awards, followed by Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X and Shawn Mendes, who were each nominated for six. BTS won three awards, becoming the most awarded act of the night, followed by Taylor Swift, Halsey and Eilish, who each won two. Sonita Alizadeh ( prs, سونیتا علیزاده; born 1996) is an Afghan rapper and activist who has been vocal against forced marriages. Alizadeh first gained attention when she released "Brides for Sale," a video in which she raps about daughters being sold into marriage by their families. With the help of Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami, an Iranian documentary filmmaker who over three years documented her story in the film '' Sonita'', Alizadeh filmed the video to escape a marriage her parents were planning for her, even though it is illegal for women to sing solo in Iran, where she was living at the time. After releasing the video on YouTube, Alizadeh was contacted by the Strongheart Group, which offered her a student visa and financial help to come and study in the United States of America, where she then relocated and has resided since. The 2018 MTV EMAs (also known as the MTV Europe Music Awards) was held at the Bizkaia Arena ( Bilbao Exhibition Centre) in Barakaldo, part of Greater Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain, on 4 November 2018.
