The Spanish National Bioinformatics Institute (INB-ISCIII; Spanish: ''Instituto Nacional de Bioinformática'') is an academic service institution tasked with the coordination, integration and development of bioinformatics resources in Spain. Created in 2003, the INB is—since 2015—the main node through which the Carlos III Health Institute is connected to ELIXIR, a European-wide infrastructure of life science data, coordinating the other Spanish institutions partaking in the initiative such as the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) and the Barcelona's National Supercomputing Center. Alfonso Valencia is a Spanish biologist, ICREA Professor, current director of the Life Sciences department at Barcelona Supercomputing Center. and of Spanish National Bioinformatics Institute (INB-ISCIII). MareNostrum (, ) is the main supercomputer in the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. It is the most powerful supercomputer in Spain, one of thirteen supercomputers in the Spanish Supercomputing Network and one of the seven supercomputers of the European infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe). MareNostrum runs SUSE Linux 11 SP3. It occupies 180 m² (less than half a basketball court). The supercomputer is used in human genome research, protein research, astrophysical simulations, weather forecasting, geological or geophysical modeling, and the design of new drugs. It was booted up for the first time on 12 April 2005, and is available to the national and international scientific community.
