The Spanish Democratic Union ( es, Unión Democrática Española; UDE) was a Spanish political party founded in 1975 as a political association, then as a party from August 1976. Among the party's most notable members were government ministers in Adolfo Suárez's first cabinet: Alfonso Osorio, Eduardo Carriles, Andrés Reguera Guajardo and Enrique de la Mata. Adolfo Suárez
Adolfo Suárez González, 1st Duke of Suárez (; 25 September 1932 – 23 March 2014) was a Spanish lawyer and politician. Suárez was Spain's first democratically elected prime minister since the Second Spanish Republic and a key figure in the country's transition to democracy after the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. When Spain was still an autocratic regime, he was appointed prime minister by King Juan Carlos in 1976, hoping that his government could bring about democracy. At the time of his appointment, he was not a well-known figure, making many political forces skeptical of his government. However, he oversaw the end of the Francoist Cortes, and the legalisation of all political parties (including the Communist Party, a particularly difficult move). Alfonso Osorio
Alfonso Osorio García (13 December 1923 – 27 August 2018) was a Spanish politician. Born in Santander on 13 December 1923, Osorio studied law at the University of Oviedo. He joined the State Lawyers Corps in 1953, serving in Cuenca and Toledo. He later joined the Legal Service of the Spanish Air Force. He was also a member of the Francoist Cortes and took several business administration positions. Osorio was named Minister of the Presidency and Second Vice President under Carlos Arias Navarro and retained his position under Adolfo Suárez, as was his very close aid during the hard times of the Transition. Osorio was appointed to the Senate from 1977 to 1979. After leaving the Suárez government and the Union of the Democratic Centre, Osorio led the Progressive Democratic Party until his resignation in September 1979. Eduardo Carriles
Eduardo Carriles (1923–2020) was a Spanish lawyer, businessman and politician who served as the minister of finance between 1976 and 1977. Biography Carriles was born in Santander on 28 November 1923. He was a lawyer by profession. He served as the general secretary of a company, Aeronáutica Industrial, and director of various other companies. Carriles was part of the reformist Tácito group, but he left the group with others to establish the Unión Democrática Española. He was part of the Unión when he was appointed minister of finance to the cabinet led by Adolfo Suárez on 7 July 1976. Andrés Reguera
Andrés Reguera (16 November 1930 – 6 June 2000) was a Spanish jurist, businessman and politician who served at the Spanish Parliament. He was the minister of information and tourism between 7 July 1976 and 4 July 1977. Early life and education Reguera was born in Segovia on 16 November 1930. His parents were Germán Reguera Antón and Pilar Guajardo Miñón. He was a graduate of the Complutense University of Madrid, where he received a degree in law in 1952. Career Reguera was an assistant professor at his alma mater in 1957. He worked as a lawyer in Vizcaya from 1961 to 1965 and as legal advisor at the Ministry of Public Works from 1965 to 1968.
