Southworth Creek
Southworth Creek is a stream, about long, in Lincoln County, in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is a tributary of the Alsea River, which it enters upstream of Waldport and the Pacific Ocean. It flows north from the slopes of Burnt Timber Mountain to join the larger stream at an elevation of just above sea level. Southworth Creek was named for Lewis Southworth, a former slave who settled there in the 1880s. It was originally called Darkey Creek until the Oregon Geographic Names Board was asked to officially change the name. Lincoln County, Oregon
Lincoln County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, its population was 50,395. The county seat is Newport. The county is named for Abraham Lincoln, 16th president of the United States. Lincoln County includes the Newport, Oregon Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Lincoln County was created by the Oregon Legislative Assembly on February 20, 1893, from the western portion of Benton and Polk counties. The county adjusted its boundaries in 1923, 1925, 1927, 1931, and 1949. At the time of the county's creation, Toledo was picked as the temporary county seat. In 1896 it was chosen as the permanent county seat. Three elections were held to determine if the county seat should be moved from Toledo to Newport. Twice these votes failed—in 1928 and 1938. Siuslaw National Forest
The Siuslaw National Forest ( ) is a national forest in western Oregon in the United States. Established in 1908, the Siuslaw is made up of a wide variety of ecosystems, ranging from coastal forests to sand dunes. Geography The Siuslaw National Forest encompasses more than along the central Oregon Coast between Coos Bay and Tillamook, and in some places extends east from the ocean, beyond the crest of the Oregon Coast Range, almost reaching the Willamette Valley. Alsea River
The Alsea River flows from Alsea, Oregon, Alsea, an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in the coastal mountains of the U.S. state of Oregon, to the Pacific Ocean near the city of Waldport, Oregon, Waldport. Waldport, Oregon
Waldport is a city in Lincoln County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,033 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Alsea River and Alsea Bay, south of Newport and north of Yachats. History Settlement of Waldport began in 1879 when David Ruble bought squatter’s rights from Lint Starr for $300 for property including the area now known as “Old Town”. Many early settlers were of German descent, and one of the names proposed for this town was Waldport, “wald” meaning forest or trees, and “port” referring to its proximity to the ocean. It is interesting to note that the town’s name is unique. The plat for the town was recorded on September 9, 1885 and by 1911, when Waldport was incorporated, it boasted a dozen businesses and 150 inhabitants. Lewis Southworth
Lewis Southworth, also identified as Louis Southworth (1830–1917), was an American pioneer in Oregon who settled a donation land claim in 1880 near Waldport in the U.S. state of Oregon. Southworth was born into slavery and brought to the Oregon Territory by his enslaver, from whom he bought his freedom with cash, earned chiefly from his expertise with the fiddle or violin. Southworth lived or worked near Monroe, Jacksonville, and Buena Vista before settling along a small tributary of the Alsea River, where he farmed and engaged in other enterprises and civic undertakings. After his first wife died in 1901, Southworth bought a house in Corvallis, where he lived for the rest of his life and married his second wife.
