Southold is a station along the Main Line (Greenport Branch) of the Long Island Rail Road. It is located on Youngs Avenue and Traveler Street, just north of NY 25 (Main Road) in Southold, New York, and is the last LIRR station to be located north of NY 25. Southold is the Long Island Rail Road's least used station, receiving 10 riders per week. History The station opened on July 29, 1844, and then was rebuilt between November 1869 and January 1870. The station was closed again in 1958, and then burned down in June 1962. When Peconic station closed sometime in 1970, Southold station became the nearest replacement. Southold is a census-designated place (CDP) that generally corresponds to the hamlet by the same name in the Town of Southold in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The CDP population was 5,748 at the 2010 census. History Southold was the first English settlement in the future New York State, though this is partially due to a historical technicality—the territory of New Netherland was still owned by the Dutch at the time, but Southold lay in a part of Long Island that was part of Connecticut at the time and was later ceded in a legal dispute. English Puritans from New Haven, Connecticut, settled in Southold on October 21, 1640. Main Line (Long Island Rail Road)
The Main Line is a rail line owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. It begins as a two-track line at the Long Island City station in Long Island City, Queens, and runs along the middle of Long Island about 95 miles (153 km) to the Greenport station in Greenport, Suffolk County. A mile east of the Long Island City station (east of Hunterspoint Avenue), the four tracks of the East River Tunnels join the two tracks from Long Island City; most Main Line trains use these tunnels rather than running to or from Long Island City. Suffolk County Transit
Suffolk County Transit is the provider of bus services in Suffolk County, New York on Long Island and is an agency of the Suffolk County government. It was founded in 1980 as a county-run oversight and funding agency for a group of private contract operators which had previously provided such services on their own. While the physical maintenance and operation of the buses continue to be provided by these providers, other matters ranging from bus purchases to route and schedule planning to fare rules are set by Suffolk Transit itself. Greenport Branch
The Ronkonkoma Branch is a rail service operated by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) in the U.S. state of New York. On LIRR maps and printed schedules, the "Ronkonkoma Branch" includes trains running along the railroad's Main Line from Hicksville (where the Port Jefferson Branch leaves the Main Line) to Ronkonkoma, and between Ronkonkoma and the Main Line's eastern terminus at Greenport. The section of the Main Line east of Ronkonkoma is not electrified and is referred to as the Greenport Branch. The Town of Southold is one of ten towns in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is located in the northeastern tip of the county, on the North Fork of Long Island. Peconic (LIRR Station)
Peconic was a station stop along the Greenport Branch of the Long Island Rail Road in Peconic, New York. The station was originally built as Hermitage station on May 1, 1848 (although some sources claim it dates back to 1844) but was renamed Peconic on the June 1876 timetable. In August 1876 a second Peconic Station replaced the former one, which was built on the south side of the tracks and on the west side of Peconic Lane. This building also served as the post office. That station was razed in April 1942 and replaced with a shelter along the platform. The post office moved to the grocery store next door where it remains to this day.
