Southern Hotel (Llano, Texas)
The Southern Hotel in Llano, Texas was erected circa 1881 by stonemasons J. K. Finlay and John Goodman in the Second Empire style for owner J.W. Owen. The hotel was built as a stagecoach stop between Mason and Burnet, later serving as a hotel and a boarding house. Originally only a two-story building, a third floor was added when Colonel W.A.H. Miller bought the hotel in 1883. It was later renamed the Colonial Inn and ceased operations in the 1950s. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1980, Marker number 9455, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in Texas October 10, 1979. Llano ( ) is a city in Llano County, Texas, United States. As of 2010, the city population was 3,232. It is the county seat of Llano County. Geography Llano is located at (30.750953, –98.680038). It is on the Llano River, northwest of Austin and north of San Antonio. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which of it (5.53%) is covered by water. Demographics 2020 census As of the 2020 United States census, there were 3,325 people, 1,221 households, and 809 families residing in the city. 2000 census As of the census of 2000, 3,325 people, 1,353 households, and 880 families resided in the city. Mason, Texas
Mason is a city in, and the county seat of, Mason County, Texas, United States. The city is an agricultural community on Comanche Creek southwest of Mason Mountain, on the Edwards Plateau and part of the Llano Uplift. The population was 2,114 at the 2010 census. History The first settler is thought to have been Peter S. Parker in 1846. The settlement of Mason grew up around Fort Mason, which was established by the United States War Department as a front-line defense against Kiowa, Lipan Apache, and Comanche, on July 6, 1851. Both the city and the county were named for David Gouverneur Burnet, the first (provisional) president of the Republic of Texas. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) is a designation awarded by the Texas Historical Commission for historically and architecturally significant properties in the U.S. state of Texas. RTHL is a legal designation and the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure. Purchase and display of a historical marker is a required component of the RTHL designation process. Because it is a legal designation, owners of RTHL-designated structures must give 60 days' notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure.
